The immigrant barge - what’s actually wrong with using it?

Educate me!

I looked at pics from the inside, it all looks very much like standard student accommodation to me, including common rooms/relaxation areas/health support on board. Residents can go on & off the boat, it’s passed fire etc safety and been used to house people in lots of other situations. I don’t understand why people think it’s not ok. Can anyone explain please?

Maybe if we stopped bloody funding the wars that their fleeing, we wouldn't be in this situation

@BarelyLiterate
"Nonsense. These are healthy young men, most of whom were fit enough to travel thousands of miles by whatever means possible to get to northern France. Covid is zero threat to them."

You're talking nonsense. Covid killed and kills people both Young and old, even very fit and healthy ones . Have you been asleep for the last three years?

CurlewKate · 08/08/2023 19:55

"Do you think these men are going to either;
a) clean
b) iron"

What makes you think "these men" won't?

NC523 · 08/08/2023 19:55

I don’t really see ironing as a priority, and I don’t see why men shouldn’t clean. If they choose not to, then frankly, they deserve to live in it dirty!

They're not 4 star hotels. They're stripped of everything that we perceive hotels to be. And things like this happen in them.

PEOPLE should be allowed to live with comfort and dignity.

I hope they keep building more - the only downside is the tories will get voted in again. Of course, even better would be to get the navy to put them all on a boat and take them back to France.

W0MEN · 08/08/2023 19:57

The average man or woman isn't. It's these feckless politicians and the greedy elitists behind the scenes that are doing satans bidding.

This is what I meant, not actually us! But our government

Sirzy · 08/08/2023 19:57

My overriding view on this one is “there but for the Grace of god”

i am lucky to have been born in a country which for all its fault is safe. Many others around the world aren’t that lucky. If I was ever in a situation to feel so unsafe I would hope others would help me rebuild my life so I want that same to be offered to others.

LastTrainEast · 08/08/2023 19:58

"We have duties to accept asylum seekers as signatories to International Conventions"

Not to people who enter illegally.

The 1951 refugee Convention allows for uninvited entry into a country if and only if you're fleeing from a country in which you're in immediate danger.

That's why people keep reminding you that there's no war in France.

Those seeking asylum here often have some link to the UK.

More than 75% of those seeking asylum here are found to have valid claims.

If either of those applied they'd be crazy to destroy their passports. They should want to show who they are.

But of course they can't as they are pretending to be refugees fleeing danger and they know it's all over when they admit they lied.

They are banking on what the traffickers told them about British people being weak and gullible.

Kweeky · 08/08/2023 19:18

Labour are against use of the barge - refugees should be in houses and other simliar accommodation - that's a good idea hahahhahhah

Excellent. Where are they going to conjure all those houses from?

Apart from the obvious issue with delay in asylum claims, I’m not sure what the answer is really. Making the wild assumption that they can’t actually be populating this ship now if they’ve categorically been told it doesn’t meet legal requirements, even if it’s not ideal, I don’t have any issue with basic but clean accommodation being used.

Not sure any of the issues such as Covid, lack of integration and language development, let alone fights, will be any worse on the barge than they seem to be in hotels. The hotel bills are eye watering.

What a mess it all is.

They tend not to have customers packed in like sardines. They tend to have life boats!

I agree about the lifeboats bit. As for the accommodation, much as I would hate to be sharing a small cabin, according to people, who previously worked on cruise ships, these rooms are far far more spacious than the accommodation provided for them as staff. They couldn’t swing a cat in the room, 2 people per cabin.

life boats not needed as it is docked, but good try.

It's only £6 million because of the slow rate at which the government is now processing asylum claims.

What sort of processing can there be given that they destroy their passports and pretend to be from a war zone. Where do you go from there?

What percentage of people who break into your home should be allowed to stay

noblegiraffe · 08/08/2023 20:06

People working on cruise ships or oil rigs aren't expected to spend the vast majority of the day in their bedroom.

blackpear · 08/08/2023 20:08

I have googled that hotel in Essex. The Sun seems to have started the story that it was housing migrants. Is there a more credible source?

gawditswindy · 08/08/2023 20:09

if the country is so dangerous, surely you’d bring your family with you?

Why not?

This thread is fucking disgusting.

The immigrant barge - what’s actually wrong with using it?
Jux · 08/08/2023 20:09

I wouldn't mind it if it was being used at its correct capacity, instead of twice that, and it was anchored somewhere where you could actually come and go freely. I also see no problem with allowing asylum seekers to work while they wait for their claim to be processed. I do see that it's important to know where people are, so maybe sign in and sign out, but that can be done with an electronic key which could also be used to enter and exit the boat like you might in student accommodation, which could also double as your individual room key and temporary ID etc. We have the tech for this.

I know I tend to view everything ina positive light, and that there may be some asylum seekers who are dishonest and up to no good; however, Ithink I'd rather a few baddies go free than imprison all the goodies just in case.

What we're doing atm is just against any principal of justice we are supposed to hold in this society.

Are these people supposed to spend the majority of the time in the bedroom? Serious question, not being facetious. There appears to be a lot of stuff to do, which makes it less like prison.

woodhill · 08/08/2023 19:51

True but it doesn't seem to happen.

There is a real shortage of accommodation and the people already here should have priority

There are more than a million empty homes in the UK.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 08/08/2023 20:13

noblegiraffe · 08/08/2023 18:37

used to house people in lots of other situations

I thought this, and that it looked okish until you remember the people in other situations spent most of their time outside the barge working.

Given the lack of space in communal areas (TV room for 12, classroom for 20 etc for 500 people) then you start to understand that because those migrants aren't allowed to work they will actually be expected to spend the vast majority of their time in those tiny bedrooms, with, as a pp pointed out, only enough place for one person to sit down.

There is a gym there and presumably laptops.

For the ones who are economic migrants and not actual asylum seekers then maybe it’ll put them off.

However, I would say that don’t overload it, only let the number of people it’s designed for on and don’t squash them in.

I can’t get upset about them only being allowed off every so often to get a bus and go out.

midsomermurderess · 08/08/2023 20:14

Asylum seekers don’t have to stay in the safe countries they come through EllenVannen. Most coming here have familial, cultural, linguistic or historical connections to the UK.

EllenVannen · 08/08/2023 20:11

I didn't know there was a war in France?

Presumably you also didn't know that the High Court in 1999 ruled that asylum seekers could transit other countries before arriving in the UK to lodge their claim. A decision confirmed on appeal by the HoLs.
