Does vapour rub smell at all?

I had some vapour rub, unopened, in a cupboard but I've never used it before in the past (I usually use Olbas Oil). Anyway, I'm not well so I thought I'd try it for the first time and I can't smell it at all. Does it just not smell?

It does smell. You might want to do a covid test!

TheSpottedZebra · 08/08/2023 15:48

It usually smells really strongly. Even when old
Can you smell anything else?

Go on a sniffing safari round the house...

RightOnTheEdge · 08/08/2023 15:48

It definitely has quite a strong smell OP!

Balloonhearts · 08/08/2023 15:50

It smells strongly enough to make the whole house reek of it. Can you smell anything else?

ChatterMonkey · 08/08/2023 15:50

It has a very strong smell... i use it when i have to change the cat litter 😂

betwelve · 08/08/2023 15:51

Oh heck, I must admit I suspected as much. Off to smell other things, then! It'll be like 2020 all over again!

I can’t smell mine though I still use it. Does COVID smells come back eventually?

Wrenjeni · 08/08/2023 15:56

When I had covid it was one of the things I used to check my sense of smell! It definitely usually smells

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 08/08/2023 15:57

It's a strong menthol scent. It might have faded due to age, but if you're getting nothing at all then your sniffer isn't working.

Mine never came back.

I don't understand, though, because I had dahl for lunch and I could taste it even though I knew it was muted.

When I had covid i couldn't smell vicks etc but could taste mostly fine.

Mysa74 · 08/08/2023 16:02

My friend lost her smell in 2020 with COVID, most smells crept back but she still can't smell coffee. Might be wishful thinking but maybe your body stopped smelling Vicks in 2020 but you don't know as you haven't opened a jar since?

Ladyoftheknight · 08/08/2023 16:20

When I had covid I could taste some things, and others couldn't taste at all. The same with smells. Do a test, take precautions etc. Hope you get your smell back!

betwelve · 08/08/2023 16:52

Thanks everyone. Been on my "sniffing safari" and immediately as I opened the kitchen door, could smell the dahl spices (will open a window when it stops raining, I hate lingering cooking smells) do I was pretty hopeful. BUT then couldn't smell my lavender hand wash or my toothpaste that has pure mint oil so is quite strong. Same goes for Dettol soap which has quite an unpleasant, pungent limonene smell. I could smell my perfume though.

Anyway, I guess I'll do a test as I have some left over.

If it is covid it's quite different from the other times I've had it.

I was honestly just expecting everyone to say "oh yeah, vapour rub is pretty mild" so this is a bit unexpected.

When I couldn’t smell Vapourrub I had covid.

BertieBotts · 08/08/2023 16:55

It's extremely strong smelling even if the jar is decades old.

When I had covid, I lost some smells but others were normal. I could smell food cooking, coffee, etc but I couldn't smell my husband's very perfumed bubble bath and I couldn't smell my toddler's nappies! Which was great TBH Grin

I have some ammonia of the strength that leaves people wheezing. I can't smell it (holdover from some sinus infection).
