When to check in

We are off on holiday Friday and check in opens online 48 hours before!
Just 2 of us travelling and I'm not bothered if we sit together, although that would be nice! But don't really want to pay anymore out!
So the question is should we check in as soon as it opens or wait until later. What would you do?

As soon as it opens. Why would you delay?

Yes, why wouldn't you check in as soon as you can? If you're not bothered you don't need to drop everything to do it immediately, but I'm not sure why you would pre-plan a specific alternative - genuinely curious!

I check in ASAP but don't pay for choosing seats. Always end up together when just two of us.

I check in as late as possible - in case there's some last minute illness and I need to reschedule/request a refund... This saved us a few weeks back when our DS got ill just before we were due to travel. Apparently once you check in you can't do that.
