I can be a slight anxious driver but more so if I feel I’ve done things wrong. Nothing is ever major im a careful driver and never speed anywhere etc. try and stick to all the road rules!

anyway..

Was driving home today and turning right into a junction. There was a pedestrian waiting to cross who was very hesitant on crossing and was stood there for a good 2 minutes. I was still waiting to go as has traffic coming towards me! A lorry then flashes me to go so I take the chance I check the junction I’m turning into and as I go to turn in the pedestrian starts to cross too! I stop in time to let her cross as I’m really not going fast at all, and I let her cross the road before I continue but she gives me the dirtiest look and stops and just stares at me!

whether she thought the lorry was flashing her to go which wouldn’t make any sense as I don’t think he could even see her but yeah now I feel bad that I should’ve done something different! Not sure what as we both cross at the same time & I do let her cross not like I just continue driving whilst she’s crossing the junction!

sometimes the rule changes can be quite confusing haha!

does anybody else get a bit overwhelmed with highway code rules and when you feel you do something wrong?

The Highway Code says pedestrians crossing a road take priority. But you stopped which was right

Every driver makes mistakes. Honestly if you replayed every incident over and over in your head you would never drive again. It sounds like the pedestrian was undecided what you were about to do and the lorry driver was being a bully. Did you flash the pedestrian to let them know it was ok to cross? If not just make sure you make your intentions clear in future.

Jessie1995 · 07/08/2023 16:09

I stopped but I was half way across the road turning into the road as we both went to go at the same time If that makes sense! But yeah I did stop so I guess that’s the best thing to do!

I think she was undecided and then we both went at the same time so I turned into the road and she crossed at the same time but I stopped and let her continue crossing as she was half way across before I continued so don’t think I could have done much more!

If you didn't flash the pedestrian to signal to them that you're letting them cross, best not to start such a habit. I hate when people use their lights to try to signal something to another road user. It's not always unambiguous! Besides that, it's just unnecessary.

I didn’t flash the pedestrian to cross. A lorry flashed me to turn into the junction I was going into and I drive into it the same time a pedestrian crosses but I then let her continue crossing obviously and let her finish crossing the road ( I was half way across turning into the junction but at least I stopped)

Was she crossing at a pedestrian crossing or at a junction. If she’s on a P/crossing then she has priority. If she’s crossing at a junction and she’s already on the road, again, you give way to her and this is what you did. She might just have one of those resting bitch faces op.
Theres a pedestrian crossing right on a roundabout near me, I can see why it’s there traffic is already slowing for the roundabout so they’ll have to stop for the crossing but some pedestrians seem to think vehicles can come to a sudden stop and just March across without breaking stride or looking before stepping onto it.

DownNative · 15/10/2023 10:44

The lorry driver breached the Highway Code by flashing you to go. That's NOT what it's for and leads to situations like you describe.

Ignore the other driver to give pedestrian right of way to cross since they take priority as most vulnerable.

Vitriolinsanity · 15/10/2023 11:23

This ridiculous interpretation of the Rules of the Road signalled with manically flashing lights has to stop.

I will not be told by some Phil Mitchell type in a van or lorry (weekend car BMW with personal plates) when to turn.

When I flatten the cyclist or hit the car coming up his near side perfectly legally, my insurance will not take into account that I was acting on some arbitrary Morse code.

ditalini · 15/10/2023 11:30

I suspect the pedestrian saw a safe chance to cross as the approaching lorry would stop you.

Mister Flash fucked that up for everyone.

Strict rules of the road only work if everyone follows them - avoid flashing or gesturing for someone to cross as you often can't be sure that it's safe.

But also, if a pedestrian waits on the pavement then it's best for everyone if you just go, otherwise you get this sort of standoff where eventually something less safe happens.

xogossipgirlxo · 15/10/2023 11:36

Everyone makes mistakes. The most important is to learn from them, as cheesy as it may sound.

EBearhug · 15/10/2023 12:05

All drivers make mistakes. It's only a problem if it causes a crash or someone is hurt, and this didn't happen.

Not all other drivers are good. No other driver can see things from the same perspective as you, and while another driver might think the road is clear, you might be seeing something they can't. You should only go on your own judgement - and if they choose to get pissed off, that's down to them. They could choose to be patient. They can't drive through you. Beeping horns and flashing lights from them don't control your car.
