Thyroid people over here please.

I have been saying for weeks that my thyroid meds needed reviewing as soon as I got an appointment with my fab GP we did bloods.

The results are drink more water, and increase Levo to 50mg.

Can anyone help me with what I can expect once I increase.

I for one am looking forward to keeping up my berries, yoghurts and nuts regime and not having to apply myself ( nicest I can come up with) to emptying my bowels the next day.

I have gained ten pounds in ten months with no change in either alcohol or food intake.

Just getting ready to go to the dentist will be back later. TIA

Are you sure you mean 50mg, and not 50mcg - micrograms rather than milligrams - OP, because 50mg is a massive dose?
Most patients need at least 75mcg and usually 100mcg, so you might not achieve euthyroid status on 50. But it will definitely be an improvement if it’s higher than your current dose. Constipation and weight gain are both symptoms of hypothyroidism.

50 mcg is a very small dose, and I was put on it when sub clinical, not actually hypo.

I'm assuming from the medication amounts that your reasonably newly diagnosed? What symptoms have you been seeing to say your meds need increasing - as hopefully you should see them all abate. Basically you should feel more "normal" 😁

Unfortunately thyroid affects so much its hard to say exactly what will happen - for me it's a reduction in fatigue, my skin stops being crazily dry, my depression lifts, and I stop putting on weight. But that's because those problems developing are my main "tells" that I'm under-medicated - for others it might be completely different.

One tiny thing to be aware of - I often find I have blood sugar crashes for the first few days after I increase meds so I make sure I'm carrying things like nuts, cereal bars etc to counteract them. It may well not happen to you, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

Good luck!

@Flev I have been on it about seven years, I had radiotherapy to the head and neck in 1990 and again in 2015, the latter doing so much damage that I can no longer eat properly, but I am here to tell the tale.

That is why I asked for a retest, as the guts of a stone weight gain with no real change, I am also religious about taking it first thing and not having coffee for thirty to forty five minutes. Which is I suspected that something was up.

Had a horrible thought as I came to this morning and fumbled around for my medication, Oh no do I need to allow an hour, for a double dose before I have a coffee…………

I did on this occasion leave an hour.

Google would suggest not necessary, so huge sigh of relief.

Just for context my coffee (freshly brewed) is brought to me in bed every morning by my DH and asking him to wait an hour would have felt like a pee take. 😂

Even if we are retired with nothing to do and all day to do it. 😂

Can I suggest you have a look at this site.

I think it is OTT as many many people manage fine with the T4 (thyroxine) but I think it's worth having a read and see what you think.

(I go on holiday to Turkey and buy T3 over there (it's very cheap to buy OTC there but for some reason costs the NHS a fortune - Big Pharma huh). I have to remember to stop taking it for a week prior to blood tests as then the doctors want to reduce my T4 as my results come in so low. I ran out of T3 during lockdown when I couldn't go to Turkey and put weight on so so fast it was scary. Getting it back under control now though.)
