Inspired by another chat in AIBU I wondered what clas you'd put me as? I always thought I was middle but maybe I'm WC?
Dad was a delivery driver, mum was a barmaid. Went to a private primary, paid for by grandparents (which is why I thought middle?) then a grammar secondary. Left with GCSE's only. Worked in banking for a while, fairly well paid at the time. Left when I had kids and now work for a charity, earn less than 30k. Live in a mortgaged 3 bed semi, but BC it's in London it's worth about £600k. So what am I?

Visiting stately homes is most definitely MC (and I have my NT pass 😂) and the confidence is fake. It's a bid to be the next class up, to fit in that shows the lack of confidence.

The middle care so much more than the working class what other people think about them. The UC look down at the middle more than the WC.

@Titicacacandle

Visiting stately homes is broadly middle class, but actually lower end middle class (it’s not a high-income pass time) and it’s mainly done by older people. The stats on this are very clear, which is why the heritage industry is frantically trying to reinvent itself.

The idea that UC class people look down on the MC more than the WC is some kind of Jilly Cooper social fantasy. I don’t imagine they think about either these days.

Actually I remember that I did this same test a couple of years ago, and I was 'elite'. I now added that I know a shop assistant socially (my son's girlfriend's p/t job, as a student) and I'm 'young and working class' Grin (I'm ancient.)

Heaven forfend an elite would befriend a member of the prolatariat...
God to keep people in their boxes.

Lol the test has me as Traditional Working Class, which seems odd as we own our home outright and have over £30k in savings!

BarbaraofSeville · 07/08/2023 13:11

And what's wrong with that @BMW6 that probably covers a lot of people, me, also my DM for a start. And lots of people like us. Homeowners who have paid off their mortgages and live quite modestly, so are able to build up savings from salary or state and often private pensions.

Newsflash, much of the WC prioritise the same sorts of things as MC, home ownership and living within their means for financial stability, rather than spending all their money on showy trinkets.

I'm middle class according to that questionnaire.

Who'd had thunk it?!

The test is rubbish. It's always dredged up on class threads, going back years, but it's good for laughs I suppose!
