Are seaside fish and chips the best?

Inspired by the recent post on the price of chips and the holiday season I wondered if people think fish and chips really do taste better by the seaside?

I'm inclined to think they do! 😋

In my experience they're either terrible or excellent at the seaside. The excellent ones at the seaside are always better than the excellent ones elsewhere though!

CopperSeahorses · 06/08/2023 17:17

The good seaside chip shops supercede those that are not by the coast.

murasaki · 06/08/2023 17:17

Yes. Even if they're not the best, the salty air just adds something to make them great.

If you can fend off the seagulls.

You need to find a chip shop with an indoor seating section though, or the seagulls will dive bomb you constantly. Seagulls are a menace.

In the car on the way back from Whitby.. Delicious fish and chips!

FrivolousTreeDuck · 06/08/2023 17:18

If they're half-decent to begin with, they taste nicer in the sea air!

justasking111 · 06/08/2023 17:18

We live by the sea lots of chippies within a couple of miles of us. Only two the locals frequent. Some are really bad but rely on tourists not complaining.

LizzieSiddal · 06/08/2023 17:19

Yes, I love fish and chips by the sea, you cannot get any better. Only problem is making sure the seagulls don’t descend.

dontgobaconmyheart · 06/08/2023 17:19

I think it's realistically a case of them tasting better in a good fish and chip shop.

I've lived by the sea in various locations almost my entire life and there are plenty of awful ones, romanticising the experience won't help a portion of reheated chips or a fish that is reasonably freshly cooked.

LeonoraFlorence · 06/08/2023 17:20

Definitely. We have just finished ours after a lovely day at the beach and it was delicious! Girls having a Mr Whippy now, so is DH. I’m stuffed though!
Looking forward to having a shower and getting into pyjamas tonight though now.
Drive home first, trying to keep DDs 4&5 awake!

SirenSays · 06/08/2023 17:20

No, I think I build them up too much in my head. They're always slightly disappointing.

KnickerlessParsons · 06/08/2023 17:22

If the fish is fresh off the boat, yes.
If it's frozen fish that got caught in U.K., sent to China to be prepared and frozen and then sent back to U.K., then no.

Hellocatshome · 06/08/2023 17:22

I live by the sea my parents live inland. Our fish and chips are far superior to theirs and also their chip shop leaves the skin on one side of the fish, what on earth is that all about?!

MaMaMeeAah · 06/08/2023 17:23

Tourist go to the big shop that weighs the bloody chip portions, locals go to the smaller one
We are right on the coast

Moredarkchocolateplease · 06/08/2023 17:23

I only eat fish and chips at the seaside, so I'd say they are always excellent!

Awful waste of calories unless you are on holiday!!

Spanielsarepainless · 06/08/2023 17:25

Yes, they are And the best of the best are seaside fish and chips in Yorkshire as they are fried in animal fat. Yum!

CatsOnTheChair · 06/08/2023 17:25

Yep. The ones 20 miles away from me, on the coast, are a class above the ones in town.
Agree with others tho - local knowledge is also beneficial to getting the best dinner.

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 06/08/2023 17:31

Depends. The worst fish and chips I ever had in my life was from a place in Brighton.
On the other hand, the tastiest fish and chips I've had, (so far), was in Hastings. So I guess 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

BarbaraofSeville · 06/08/2023 18:07

Like a PP says, the best ones are in Yorkshire, if they're fried in beef dripping.

Must be haddock, don't need to be from the seaside.

Merapi · 06/08/2023 18:14

Best seaside fish & chips I ever had was in Swanage in Dorset around the mid 1980's and I still remember them. That's how good they were!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/08/2023 18:18

The best fish and chips I ever had were in Ullapool. We watched the fishing boats come in, and ate the fish about 30 mins later. Couldn't have been fresher.

DirtyDuvet · 06/08/2023 18:19

Need one that use animal fat to fry- the rest are all rubbish wherever they are

Titsywoo · 06/08/2023 18:20

Not in my experience but it probably depends where. Best I have ever had were in Yorkshire. Very very good. Sadly I live in the SE so rarely get to eat them.

FortunaMajor · 06/08/2023 18:46

I used to really rate my local chippy, but then I went to Lewis's in Seahouses and it's ruined me forever. They were the best I've ever had and my local's taste really bland now in comparison.

Brexile · 06/08/2023 18:50

The best fish and chips is in Scotland IMO!
