A stranger gave me flowers today

A little boy of about 3 I'd say. I was just leaving a cafe and he walked up to me and held them up to my face, waving them slightly. I said "oh they're pretty" . He continued waving them. Several times. I looked around to see a woman watching, said "he's trying to give your flowers away" and she said "no, they're for you. We do something nice for somebody each week"

I said thank you, how lovely etc. And then gulped and blinked many times. I'm having a tough time atm . What a lovely way to brighten my day.

This is just lovely OP!

When a stranger gives you flowers, that's impulse. (so the advert says, if you're too young).

DrunkenKoala · 05/08/2023 23:17

That’s lovely.

One Monday morning a couple of years ago I came out of my house to find someone had put a single flower (daffodil I think) on the windscreen of almost every car on our road. I spoke to someone about it (away from our street) and they said someone had done the same on a nearby road a week or so earlier. It certainly brightened up a lot of people’s mornings.

Thank you, well - some of you. It was a sweet moment.

I had a load of the McDonald's monopoly stickers for free stuff and it was like pulling teeth trying to give them away
Maybe they were all on MN Grin
I was outside McDonald's like "have a sticker for a free meal" being looked at like I was trying to rob them

TheCatterall · 05/08/2023 23:45

I do this occasionally - without the amall
child as mine are grown up.

I give out random sincere compliments, the odd bunch of flowers, the marks and Spencer’s freebies - I often get the free Percy pig sweet pack with the sparks card - I’ll find a family and ask parents if I can and pass the sweets and receipt over.

it brightens someone’s day. It lifts me up. I’m paying forward the humanity and happiness.

happy humaning folks.

I think that’s lovely! Someone came up to me and DS in ikea cafe and gave him a teddy once (one they’d paid for, not one they’d just grabbed off the shelf in ikea!!) and it made his day.

I like paying for other people’s coffee, anonymously. I’m not on TikTok, I just like the idea that a tiny gesture can brighten someone’s day.

Rummikub · 06/08/2023 00:09

I think it’s lovely and glad it touched you.

ive given flowers to a stranger before. It was a bunch Id received from an on
line date and as I was walking back to my car I saw a coupon and gave them the flowers. They were a bit confused tbf.

Christ there's some cynics on this thread ain't there?! God forbid anyone do something just because it's nice eh?

It's not being cynical.

It's lovely it cheered OP up, so the person chose well.

I would not like this, and I really hate the idea of the 3 yo coming up with the flowers to a stranger. It's performative & a bit exploitative, in my mind.

I'm all for kind acts, and hope I do some regularly - little things, like allowing someone ahead of you in the queue, giving people time to park / reverse etc, helping someone with heavy bags, buggy, kids.

I remember one thing from years ago - I had just done a grocery shop with 3 v small kids, the youngest weeks old. My then H was abusive. I was feeling terrible & as I struggled out with trolley & kids, the heavens opened. A lady I just knew to see came back from her car, opened up an umbrella for me & baby, and negotiated the trolley + older two kids to my car. She helped me load kids + shopping. She didn't think anything of it but it was the kindest thing that had happened to me & what I really needed in that moment.

That's the kind of kind acts I value.

Was going go.say the same😂
Showing my age!

Solaire · 06/08/2023 09:23

I think its lovely & I’m glad it cheered you up a little op, I’d be chuffed too.

Summerhillsquare · 06/08/2023 10:16

I'm quite often given left over paid parking in a town I go to. The locals are particularly friendly or perhaps I look in need!

SunnieShine · 06/08/2023 10:19

I wouldn't like it.

Iamacatslave · 06/08/2023 10:27

I think it’s lovely.

upinaballoon · 06/08/2023 17:10

Quote from somewhere, I can't remember where: Kind people live in a kind world.

That's a terrible quote. What is it supposed to mean?

HandInMine · 06/08/2023 18:25

My first thought was tiktok. 😬

YouAreAlwaysOnMyMind · 06/08/2023 18:27

You’ll be on tiktok by now. 😅

RunningFromInsanity · 06/08/2023 18:32

Sometimes people just do nice things.
I often buy chocolate or doughnuts for paramedics if they are at the shop at the same time as me. Usually leave it on the bonnet or with the cashier as I don’t want any gratitude.

PuffyShirt · 06/08/2023 18:34

I already hate that child’s mum 😂

This would have annoyed the crap out of me. Self-serving bollocks.

LightSpeeds · 06/08/2023 18:36

That's lovely 💐

ArcaneWireless · 05/08/2023 20:01

The lovely thing about this is that, on this particular day, you needed them and they gladdened your heart.

Today that is all that matters. 🌻

This. A lot of joy sucking cynics on this thread.

BlowMyBubbles · 06/08/2023 18:46

When my ds was 3 years he had a thing about giving daffodils to people. I'd let him buy a few bunches, separate and wrap them up, and he'd take them to the neighbours or people we knew. He for some reason just wanted to give flowers and it was cute. Not sure I'd encourage him to give to strangers as you wouldn't be able to predict their reaction.

Lovely that you enjoyed it op, hope things get better for you.

gogomoto · 06/08/2023 18:54

I love this sort of thing. I was serving in a charity shop and a regular customer brought me courgettes last week which made my day

PuffyShirt · 06/08/2023 19:13

Neighbours, a regular customer - all nice gestures.

Random strangers? Intrusive and self-serving.
