Been lurking for a while, and registered to comment on another thread.

However, was slightly horrified when I went to register.

How can you be “Unspecified”?

You are either male or female.

Come on mumsnet. You can do better than this. For a site that is called ‘Mumsnet’, it must surely understand that you are either male or female.

If it wants to fall down the sex/ gender rabbit hole, have two sections on registration.

ie,
sex - male or female

gender / what you identify as - male, female, cat, pigeon etc

Was horrified that Mumsnet has fallen on the first hurdle.

(Taking bets on how long this thread will stay up)

This

Many people obviously do care. For reasons of truth, reality, women's rights etc.

We don't all have to care about the same things.

BaronMunchausen · 07/08/2023 14:13

"have you got any children" is binary, with just the "prefer not to say".

I guess the "unspecified" means mnhq believe that sex is not binary...but that they can't actually specify any sex other than female or male!

SomewhereWithSomeone · 07/08/2023 14:26

Mumsnet trying not using the word gender or sex so as not to piss anyone off but making it worse.

I didn’t answer any of it. You can click ‘skip this step’ at the bottom.

Also why is male listed first? Alphabetical? Nope. Most common? Er, nope. Especially not on this site. Most important? Ah there it is!

This a big bugbear of mine.

Oooooo @clary I've never noticed this! But now I have it's going to probably drive me mad too!!

It's a form on the internet, not entry to a women's refuge.

Given its a parenting site I'd guess most 'unspecified' are going to be females who identify as a man/non binary but are parents and want sleep advice at 3am.

What, all 2.5 of them? And they're simultaneously all members of evil MN? Sure.

I like an unspecified option. Website admins don't need to know my sex.

But why do they have unspecified and prefer not to say? Isn't that the same thing

IamThegreaterMole · 07/08/2023 14:45

There are people with disorders of sex development, which has nothing to do with gender. They may wish to use the unspecified category

This.

if you don’t want to announce your sex/gender use the ‘ prefer not to say’ option.

what does ‘unspecified’ mean in this sense?

Is think unspecified means neither of the specified option applies to you, so neither male or female nor "prefer not to say".

Maybe for people who wouldn't mind saying but don't find it on the list of specified options.

Having said that of all the things I don't think this is worth bothering about.

There are two sexes, female and male. Sex is dichotomous. People with DSDs are one or the other. For example, people with Congenital adrenal hyperplasia are female; people with Klinefelter syndrome are male.
