CCTV Query

Next door neighbour has installed a CCTV camera on the boundary fence right by my property. The camera is pointing to their property however having looked up the camera it records all sound and it is right by my property so all conversations etc are being recorded in my garden. Any advice? Is this even allowed?

Just because the camera can doesn’t mean it does. We have Blink cameras and have them set to only record our areas. Eg our driveway shows next doors car on their drive but we have that greyed out so it won’t record motion or sound. Could you ask them?

You can set them to not do everything they are capable of, our ring doorbell only activates when someone comes onto our drive even if someone walks past on the pavement because we have deliberately limited it’s range, and we have sound recording turned off, I also have sound recording switched off on my dashcam because its not fair on other people in the car. So unless you have reason to be concerned about these neighbours specifically I wouldn’t assume the worst. You could always ask them.

It's probably worth asking them. I've got a Ring camera in my garden it records sound but unless the conversation is taking place literally at my decking you can't make any of it out. I've also got it set so my neighbours gardens are blocked out.

I'd ask them to show you the set up & see how much they can or can't see

They’re quite a difficult neighbour and are a little paranoid and nosey. Me approaching them wouldn't work. It feels a little like it has been positioned to deliberately ‘spy’.

If you are that close they'd be able to hear everything you say in the garden anyway though? We are in a terraced house and always aware that anything we say in the garden or even in the kitchen with the back door open can be heard by either side next door. We don't always know whether they are out there or not because of the fences. It would also be quite hard work for them to sift through all the recordings to catch you having a chat (we never really look at our ring doorbell recordings, unless we want to eg confirm if a delivery has been made while we're out or if something suspicious had happened)

I understand that but these people aren’t the nicest and I just have a feeling there is some motive and it concerns me. We are a close family so spend a lot of time chatting and sharing personal info - usually in the garden in the summer. It makes me really uncomfortable that r why could record it and listen to it back.
