Extra charges - Airbnb

Hi

We booked three nights in an Airbnb apartment in France, and the main part of the listing said that the sheets and towels are included in the £80 cleaning fee which we have paid.

A few days ago we checked regarding the sheets and towels and the owner said that they are included.

Yesterday however the owner wrote back and in the same thread the concierge has told him not to give customers the wrong answer. It seems that we now need to pay an extra approximately £61 in linen fees.

We screenshotted the advert (which I have attached a part of) where it clearly says that the linen is included in the cleaning fee.

The owner wrote back not acknowledging this at all but saying that the site does say that the sheets need to be paid for.

We looked further and under another section called 17 amenities it is true that “essentials” is crossed out (I have also attached this).

We should have noticed this discrepancy and queried it earlier - however, the owner’s response when we again pointed out the first screenshot was to say that other people had paid this fee and that if we didn’t want to we could do without sheets and towels.

So two things here - the fact that part of their advert is wrong - and that the owner initially confirmed that sheets and towels were included. Actually three things - his rudeness and lack of any kind of acknowledgment of the mistake in his advert.

We have gone to Airbnb customer support and they are going to find an “amicable solution” between us and the vendor.

We have until 24 hours before we arrive at the properly to pay for the linen otherwise we won’t get it - so that means this issue has to be resolved by early this afternoon. So I am guessing we will have to pay the extra £61 added to what is already an expensive stay as we can no longer cancel and get a refund.

Just wondering if anyone else has come across this kind of thing and how you handled it.

I would expect air b&b to back you fully and not pay the fee.

The list of exclusions that states "essentials" is not clear at all. Could mean anything.

I wouldn't pay for linen and leave an awful review.

Is there any other properties on air b&b you could use instead?

Thanks @MadeForThis - it’s too late to transfer to another property sadly as we wouldn’t get a full refund from this one.

Nothing back from Airbnb yet regarding the ´amicable solution’ so we’ll see.

Can you not just take your own towels?

Airbnbquestion · 03/08/2023 09:21

Thanks BigGreen.

Regarding taking our own towels Mylobster, we don’t have space as we only have carry on free luggage. But in any case it isn’t just towels it’s all the bed linen as well.

I think the problem is that owners list on a variety of sites and it's not easy to check what's included and what isn't as it varies from site to site. We've been 'caught' by this kind of thing before, and I think particularly in France charging separately for linen and for cleaning is more of a thing. These days I just try to take a relaxed attitude and accept that there might be some extra charges, but it's still probably cheaper than a week away in the UK (and with better weather!). The last one we stayed in reading some of the other listings I thought we might get hit by a 68 euro cleaning fee but in the end it was only 45 euro for linens so we just left the cash and felt we'd got off lightly.

Not only has the owner listed sheets and towels as included, they've also confirmed to you via message (presumably through Air BnB so their team will be able to see it) that they are. I think Air BnB will find in your favour here op.

Doidontimmm · 03/08/2023 09:31

What does the listing actually state as these are not using listed under cleaning fee? Can you link it?

Taking your own linen to france has always been a thing . Lots of places didn’t supply even at an additional cost
