What does this mean on Instagram?

I recently noticed someone I follow on instagram has not posted for a while, they're usually a regular poster. I went onto their profile to have a look and noticed a few posts that I've never seen and have not appeared on my feed. What does this mean? I know they've not blocked me as I visited their profile and saw everything, and I'm definitely still following them. It's a bit odd, just wondering what this means and if they've somehow restricted me from seeing their posts?

Just that insta hasn’t served up their ousts to you when you’ve been on there.

Ah ok, why would that happen though? Not noticed in happening to anyone else I follow.

I don't follow that many people so I'd notice.

You wouldn't be able to see their posts at all if they had restricted your access. I don't think you can restrict access on Instagram anyway. You can on Facebook but if you someone has restricted your access on Facebook you can't see the post even if your go on to their page.

huhhun · 02/08/2023 18:18

Ok thank you. So not been restricted then. It just seems so odd. I see everyone else's post on my feed, just not there's. So there is no way they've stopped me from seeing posts on my feed? It's just instagram being weird?

Instagram decides which posts you see, just like Facebook really.
If you keep going onto her page and interact with her posts - like/comment etc, then eventually insta will add her feed to the algorithm.

huhhun · 02/08/2023 18:24

But I do interact with her posts, always like them and sometimes comment. Hmm, I don't get it.

You can restrict access on Instagram so you don't come up in a feed and so your comments have to be authorised to be shown on the picture.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 02/08/2023 18:33

It happens for a few reasons and it's in instagrams hands.
So as well as how you interact, if the account you're following is for example doing 'lives' rather than 'reels' then insta will downgrade their visibility so they don't appear on anyone's feed. You have to do what insta want you to do in order to increase your reach.

Do they post anything controversial? Have they maybe been shadow banned?

fungibletoken · 02/08/2023 18:35

It sounds like Instagram has been tinkering with its algorithms as I've seen some pages I follow complain that not all their posts are being seen under the new system and it doesn't make a lot of sense. So doubtful anything you've done, OP, but appreciate it's annoying!

namechanger563 · 02/08/2023 18:36

Sorry should have said:

An Instagram shadowban is an unofficial ban that restricts an account's visibility (in users' feeds, Stories, Explore pages etc.), negatively affecting reach. It can happen when an account posts sensitive content or enters a gray area of the platform's Community Guidelines.

VisionsOfSplendour · 02/08/2023 18:37

Algorithms innit 😀

huhhun · 02/08/2023 19:25

@namechanger563 no they don't post anything controversial at all, just the usual holiday photos etc.

Maybe they've done this then? They've restricted me so that I don't see their posts on my feed? I can see their comment box and can start and comment, but not tried to actually send it.

But it could just be the algorithm, as most of you've said. Still very odd that they're the only ones. I'm so worried I've done something to annoy them!

Pop a comment under a photo and see if it appears. I've restricted someone on my feed and their comments don't show unless I manually approve them.

huhhun · 02/08/2023 20:07

Just did a bit of research and apparently when you're restricted you still see their posts on your feed. So I don't think I have been restricted? Unless instagram have had an update that changes this?

Must be the algorithm. But that's completely shit as now I'll never be sure if I've seen all my followers posts. And also people might not see mine.
