Hi all, looking at moving back to the UK next year with 10 and 12 year old. Family are all in Nottingham where I was raised, have been gone 17 years. Wanting to move close to be near family but I feel we need a new adventure rather than moving back to what we know . Have been looking at Rutland but slightly concerned it will be too quiet for us after living in Auckland for 17 years. If anyone can provide feedback on Oakham or other potential places that would be much appreciated. Our priorities are a good secondary school and a fantastic welcoming community with easily accessible activities for kids like football, tennis, biking etc. Thanks a million in advance

Oakham is lovely as is most of Rutland but it’s quite rural and not especially cosmopolitan if that’s your thing.
Property is expensive though

I grew up just outside Rutland, the other side of Stamford, while Stamford is really lovely, it’s very rural and very quiet, I hated it, so flat and so dull. Rutland itself may be nicer, but the bit between Stamford and Peterborough is grim.

I live in a village in Rutland, but we're nearer to Stamford than Oakham. Stamford is a much nicer town, Oakham has gone the way of a lot of towns now; charity and coffee shops. Stamford, Oakham and Uppingham have good secondary schools (the private schools are excellent). I love it here but apart from 3 years at uni, I've never lived in a city and wouldn't want to. It might be a bit of a culture shock coming from Auckland, especially for your soon to be teens.
