UTI help

I’m in bloody agony.

I self catheterise, I’ve started with a horrendous UTI - peeing blood and bladder spasms. It sounds awful but I’ve got a heartbeat down there I’m so sore.

I’ve got the UTI from cathing but if I don’t cath I don’t pee…

I’m on holiday, with my aunty - out in relative countryside - but her GP surgery are saying can’t help me til tomorrow, even then I’d have to go there twice and it’s miles away. I’ve managed to buy some nitrofurantoin online to get delivered tomorrow but meantime what do I do? I’ve got a bit of a fever, I’m drinking and drinking but I’m in tears every time I wee (which is every 15 minutes) and feel fluey with it.

I’ve had surgery to my bladder twice, urodynamics twice, have complex history of admissions for UTIs/kidney spread - and been under urology since I was 18 (now mid 30s) so pharmacy/Boots etc won’t touch me.

Meant to ask, is there anything that works to take the nip out in the meantime?

Only thing I can suggest is 111 or walk in centre. Ooor you. Where did you get nitro online? I need some as I have just developed a uti as well!

UTImisery · 31/07/2023 16:43

Health express, was about £15, free delivery

I’m so sore it’s unreal. 111 said to go into town for Boots but I don’t drive, my aunty is working, and town is a 5 mile walk!

Oh poor you. Sending empathetic hugs.

Cotswoldmama · 31/07/2023 16:47

Can you call your surgery for a telephone call appointment and they can send a prescription to a local pharmacy? You'll need the postcode of a local one when you call them so they know where to send it. I work at a gp surgery and we do this quite a lot.

UTImisery · 31/07/2023 16:52

Trouble is I’m in England and my GP is in Scotland … so I don’t think they’d do it sadly. Plus my GP would tell me to go to A&E from experience, my last infection was multi drug resistant.

That's your answer I'm afraid. You have complex needs that Boots or the Internet cannot help with. Can you book a taxi and go?

UTImisery · 31/07/2023 17:11

There’s no taxis around here apparently (not very sure). I’ll speak to my aunty once she’s done with work - her husband is a doctor (but specialises in moles) so he’ll be able to judge it I presume. I should have asked my GP for a pack of antibiotics to take away just in case , but had hoped it wouldn’t happen while away. It’s so bloody sore it’s unreal.

It’s worth googling for nearby taxis/checking if there’s any Ubers by you but I think you need to head straight to an A&E too.

poor you it sounds so uncomfortable. I sometimes find a hot water bottle or ice pack (make sure there’s a suitable barrier between skin and heat/ice) can be quite soothing in the meantime.

Haggisfish3 · 31/07/2023 18:46

A walk in centre would see you or an and e even if you normally are in Scotland.

UTImisery · 31/07/2023 21:17

My aunty’s found a pack of nitrofurantoin, two years out of date but will see if it helps tonight at least. Slightly less pain than I had.

How are you op?

UTImisery · 06/08/2023 12:51

Back home and UTI has just come straight back. Spiked a fever this morning and passing blood clots. Guessing it wasn’t sensitive to nitrofurantoin or course wasn’t long enough. Rang 111 at 9am and told I should get an appt at some point today.

Cornettoninja · 06/08/2023 16:51

I hope you’re sorted out soon @UTImisery Flowers

RedRosette2023 · 06/08/2023 16:52

how are you OP?

UTImisery · 08/08/2023 10:05

Got given coamoxiclav and seeing urology consultant in 2 weeks time. GP said to be prepared I’ll need another cystoscopy at the minimum.

OP posts:
UTImisery · 08/08/2023 10:07

Coamoxiclav is hellish for side effects, I’m feeling horrendously sick and the other end is like what happens after you take laxatives for a colonoscopy - I’m getting about 20 seconds warning. Have to travel again today up to visit other family (essential I go, or I’d cancel). God knows how I’m going to cope on the train. I’ve had Imodium and cocodamol and still stomach is making ominous noises.

RedRosette2023 · 08/08/2023 10:43

I’ve had that antibiotic together with another before and felt awful too.

Haggisfish3 · 08/08/2023 11:19

Oh poor you op. Good you got referral though.
