Different title number from the rest of the building and the current freeholder is looking to sell their interest? A bit like a ransom strip, but this time it's the physical staircase for the building.

BuffaloCauliflower · 31/07/2023 16:01

How bizarre? The council has been selling bits of grass on my road to private businesses, no idea why they’re not big enough to do anything with, this feels like the same thing

SoCentralRain · 31/07/2023 16:02

What on earth?
Can I buy it and charge people to come up and down my stairs? 🤔

AutumnCrow · 31/07/2023 16:09

But it's not just the access stairwell, it's the fire escape?!

TheDogsMother · 31/07/2023 16:16

I understood from the News that it is no longer open to or part of the main building.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 31/07/2023 16:20

Judging by the amount of junk stored in there on the virtual tour it doesn't look like its being used as a fire escape, if there is no right of access from the rest of the building and they have other ways of getting in and out then it could possibly be made into an odd 3 storey property with maybe a narrow spiral staircase, alternatively it would make a good greenhouse. If it is the fire escape then it needs clearing and is useless for anything else.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 31/07/2023 16:58

That's basically a service road with parking, bins and the backs of shops in the main road.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 31/07/2023 17:02

I live down the road from that and I'm trying to visualise the access to that. There is a road but the cars are probably parked in the (now closed down pub) car park. I don't think it's accessible from the main road at all.

a bit like these little parcels of land. When viewed from streetview, they are actually the entrance driveways to a few houses each. i wonder if the buyer would be able to charge the homeowners to cross them? I can’t htink what else you would do with them. If I was the homeowner I would definitely be trying to buy the one giving access to my house!

"strategic long term investment opportunity" so turn them into private roads and charge access? Can residents not apply to the council and ask they're adopted as public highway?

CoffeeDrinkerLatte · 31/07/2023 18:00

Imagine getting custom curtains for that!

I'm not sure they could make it a private road. That's the back of shops and flats, although above that Starbucks might be offices. At the moment I think the access is the car park, I'll mosey along tomorrow and have a look at what's happening.
