Dd hurt toe- broken or not?

Dd8 ran into a chest if drawers and stubbed her toe yesterday. 24hours later she's still saying it hurts all the time and it's swollen, she's struggling to walk on it. I'm thinking it might be broken or just bruised. Any point going to minor injuries?

Needs an X-ray to make sure so yes take her

I broke my little toe and the one next to it, it was agony. Went to the hospital, confirm they were broken, told there was nothing they could do to help it, take paracetamol. Asked for crutches, refused.

So I'd say no point at all.

DD broke her toe last year, took her to A&E as it was swollen and she was couldn't walk on it but they just said "yep, it's most likely broken, nothing we can do". Just advised to strap it to the next one, Calpol and rest it. They didn't X-ray.

Stubbed toe hard. X-ray indicated it was broken but that it also needed to be reset before strapping/taping. Do your best to get it xrayed

When I broke my toe I just strapped it to the next one and wire the comfiest shoes I had. There really is nothing else they can do for it. Are you on holiday in the uk or flying?

Iammetoday · 31/07/2023 16:51

@NotLovingWFH just in uk. They think toe is broken. Waiting on xray to see if foot is broken....

Not my finest hour, I was chasing my teenage son round the house to tickle him because he had been cheeky to me, we were joking around, and he stubbed his toe on the skirting board. He was off abroad on a school trip the following day, so as he was in a lot of pain we went to a and e - if teachers were going to be in loco parentis we wanted to have it checked before he went. A and E didn't even bother x raying it as said there was nothing they could do, just to.strap to the next toe if it was painful, and take painkillers.

PandaG · 31/07/2023 17:03

Xpost - hope it is just the toe!

GingerIsBest · 31/07/2023 17:04

Well, for just a toe, there's not much they can do. But if they're worried about more than the toe, it sounds like you were right to go to A&E.

The worst part about a broken toe (speak from bitter experience) is that the swelling makes walking impossible - not just putting weight on it, but in my experience, even limping makes you flex your toes, which, with the swelling, is unbearable. Lots of icing - multiple times a day - and the strongest painkillers you can, including ibuprofen for anti inflammatory purposes - and usually the extreme pain fades after about 2-3 days. But it can take a few weeks to feel completely normal again.

Hopefully it's not the foot as well as that's probably going to need a cast etc.

@Iammetoday Either way you’ll be fine to go on holiday hopefully and can get a boot or something for support. These things happen unfortunately but hopefully with pain relief it won’t spoil things too much.

mamakoukla · 31/07/2023 20:42

Maybe controversial but this whole there’s nothing they can do for a toe except strap it isn’t always correct or the best way to resolve it. The X-ray of the broken toe showed it needed reset not just strapped. If it was only strapped, it would have healed and led to long term pain. Don’t be fobbed off with just strap it until they’ve done imaging. Really glad they are doing that for your daughter; hope she heals well
