Shall I go see the Barbie movie today, yes or no?

I've taken today off work to meet up with a friend and have just had a message from her to say her DD has a high temperature and won't sleep so she is cancelling. I've now got the day to myself and thinking I might go and see the Barbie movie. Been googling reviews and they're mixed. The cinema is an expensive treat - shall I go? Is it worth it?

It's not brilliant but it's an enjoyable watch.

TheTempest · 31/07/2023 00:38

I thought it was great!

bellabelly · 31/07/2023 00:39

I went to see it on Saturday and LOVED it. Very funny and clever - and quite moving too. So I vote YES, go and see it!

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 31/07/2023 00:43

I could treat myself to lunch on the way too couldn't I?

What are the other alternatives?
And do you like going to cinema on your own or not?

InstantGratificationDarkPlaygroundOfMN · 31/07/2023 00:46

Love going to cinema on my own - and yes, treat yourself to lunch too - but I can't recommend Barbie. Overhyped, brilliantly marketed crock.

I don't have any alternatives at the moment. Only received the message half an hour ago, weather looking shit and it's that or chores really! I don't mind going to the cinema by myself.

Barbie is a very entertaining film, well worth seeing. I saw it on my own, as I do just about all films.

if you have the time, Oppenheimer, is also excellent. I never looked at my watch once in three hours.

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 31/07/2023 01:50

I would like to see Oppenheimer but perhaps to heavy viewing for my mood atm.

I saw it today, its quite good. Think rave reviews are in the context of it being from the Barbie brand so seen in that light its clever and feminist. Worth a watch if you've no other plans....also if there is a Vue near you, they're really cheap compared to other cinemas!

Loopylooni · 31/07/2023 07:07

I thought it was good but essentially an easy watch with pretend feminism. The cinema was full of women in groups in pink. Go and have a lighthearted day out seeing it.

MinnieMountain · 31/07/2023 07:08

I saw the trailer and I’m tempted to go alone. It looks fun.

Marsyas · 31/07/2023 07:10

I’ve seen it twice. I think it is clever, funny and moving.

rollerblind · 31/07/2023 07:12

Sorry to jump on this but is it suitable for a 7 year old? My daughter would like to go but I've noticed it's a 12A? Confused

chosenone · 31/07/2023 07:23

Go! It's great.
It's fun and lighthearted st first with lots on references that make you laugh. It then becomes more layered and has a feminist slant, not too deep but enough to get young girls thinking! A 7 year old won’t get the older references but will enjoy it on their own level.

Loopylooni · 31/07/2023 07:23

@rollerblind no, I wouldn't take my kids as the humour would go over their heads. It's definitely an adult movie

EileenBrysonsTeabags · 31/07/2023 07:32

The Barbie thread in the Films topic has quite polarising views.

Ive been twice and enjoyed it more the second time. Funny, clever, bright and entertaining. Some good music and dance numbers too.

tossingpenniesinthepool · 31/07/2023 07:37

I think if you're over 25, go but lower your expectations if you're expecting it to be as good as the hype!!

Saying that, younger family members are raving about it.

Whatever you do, enjoy your day OP!

I took my 8 year old and they loved it and didn’t stop talking about it. It’s like the more grown up level they didn’t notice, they just loved barbie and Ken and the outfits and the singing and fun bits. It’s a mix of silly and serious, but the serious stuff isn’t inappropriate for kids to see. My child saw the simplistic side of the movie. It felt like we had watched 2 different films! There were quite a lot of kids in the afternoon showing that we saw and none were bored or messing around, all came came out smiling. Some of the adults seemed bored though.

MerryMarigold · 31/07/2023 07:44

Cinema night be cheaper than you think. Our dodgy one is only 3.50. The Vue is 4.99.

Unwisebutnotillegal · 31/07/2023 07:56

I thought it was drivel and my ten year old said it was weird. It was really vacuous and the humour was just odd.

ElectricTouch · 31/07/2023 08:07

I loved the film, found it really fun and thought-provoking. It very surreal and pokes fun at itself, visually it's delightful and bonkers and I don't know how someone would call its message 'pretend feminism'. It is feminist!

I also think going to the cinema alone feels like a real indulgence and you should absolutely do it. Enjoy!

I took my just turned 8 Yr DGC and she was pretty bored. It's not really a young kids film

moreplantslessmeat · 31/07/2023 08:25

No I thought it was terrible!

Jayneisagirlsname · 31/07/2023 08:36

Yes! I loved it. Took my Mum (72) and my DD (12) and they both loved it too. Sparked some great conversations with dd about the patriarchy as well.
Several women seeing it on their own when I went.
