Shall I go see the Barbie movie today, yes or no?

I've taken today off work to meet up with a friend and have just had a message from her to say her DD has a high temperature and won't sleep so she is cancelling. I've now got the day to myself and thinking I might go and see the Barbie movie. Been googling reviews and they're mixed. The cinema is an expensive treat - shall I go? Is it worth it?

It was a very light film but I thought it was boring and only raised a slight smile a couple of times, definitely wouldn't say it was funny. I and would rather watch something funny or with an interesting storyline but it depends what you feel like.

Louloulouenna · 31/07/2023 08:41

Funny for the first 30 minutes and then repetitive and lame.

megletthesecond · 31/07/2023 08:41

Yes, it's fun.

LaPerduta · 31/07/2023 08:47

Lots of cinemas are cheap on a Monday - only costs about £5 where I am.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/07/2023 08:49

Go and see it. I thought it was really cleverly done,it surprised me.

Noorandapples · 31/07/2023 09:08

It is really brilliant! Not worth taking a child under 13 to see imo, I did see some parents taking young girls out due to sexual harassment scene and v obvious innuendos, but tbf it's a 12a so 🤷
I think every woman should watch it, maybe even every man. It's a good way to test what kind of man he is by his reaction!

Willmafrockfit · 31/07/2023 09:09

its great
i was smiling throughout

OverTheCountryClub · 31/07/2023 09:10

DH and I saw it recently. We both loved it! I say go for it!

ElectricTouch · 31/07/2023 09:11

OP, clearly it's polarising so you must go and see it and report back which side you fall on!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 31/07/2023 09:13

I really enjoyed it. It's fun but sort of serious.

Oppenheimer is tedious so I wouldn't go to that on my own. I usually like that kind of film too.

TakenRoot · 31/07/2023 09:14

Monday matinees are often cheaper, do you have a Picturehouse cinema near you? I know Mondays / matinees are cheaper there.

And it is rainy and gloomy where I am so I would go.

greenteaandmarshmallows · 31/07/2023 09:15

I'd go. If you get bored you could always have a snooze

momlife3 · 31/07/2023 09:21

Yes. However I did go with my 10th at old girl who is already struggling to adjust to becoming older and not liking the same things she used to like. So it was a bit emotional 😭

Sunnydaysareahead · 31/07/2023 09:39

I went with my 9 yr old and loved it (it was a couple of hours of escapism for me - away from the dreary weather and just sitting being entertained not needing to do anything!). I would have gone and seen it on my own if it wasn't school hols.

As people have said there are cheap options around for a Monday. Plus if you look at Tastecard -sometimes they do a free trial and you can get cheaper cinema tickets (just remember to cancel before the trial ends)

MammaTo · 31/07/2023 09:39

Yes it’s a great film. Plus I thought it was nice seeing everyone dressed in pink and taking their little girls to see the film and seeing their excitement. Was so fun.

vinoandbrie · 31/07/2023 09:40

Yes, do it!

Superfood · 31/07/2023 09:41

Pretend feminism is right..there must be a better film you could see, surely?

In what way is it pretend feminism? What is pretend feminism? There are different schools of thought within the umbrella of feminism and different waves of feminism but I don't know how you categorise some as real and some as pretend?

MadMadMad · 31/07/2023 10:00

Yes, it could be about half an hour shorter but it is an interesting watch.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 31/07/2023 10:01

I liked it! The Picturehouse near me is £7.99 on Monday (usually £10.99) so a bit cheaper?

Very briefly (phone battery dying) I'd say that things that very superficially pay lip service to feminist ideas in order to cash in on them for the purpose of making a fortune for extremely anti-feminist corporations that have spent decades promoting misogyny to young girls, and continue to do so, are not doing anything of value to help women and girls in the real world.

Louloulouenna · 31/07/2023 10:09

I agree with that, see also WALL-E and Disney Corporation except it’s feminism instead of consumerism.

I do agree in terms of Mattel, but I think having Greta Gerwig write and direct brings in a genuinely subversive element. I think there are genuine feminist ideas in there that will start discussion - that has provoked a lit already - and there is value in that. But take your point too.

garlictwist · 31/07/2023 10:13

I was not expecting to particularly enjoy it (went with some friends who were keen to go) but really surprised myself but how good it was. I would go.

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 31/07/2023 12:24

I’m on my way!
I don’t own any pink clothes so am head to toe in black.
will they refuse me entry?
