I tried to Google but the second place recommended was only 16 degrees on average in January.

Anyone got any good recommendations?

I think you need the Canaries, Turkey or possibly Cyprus at that time of year.

South Spain?

DH burnt his head in Seville in early Feb 1 year in a matter of hours

Canaries, but that's a 4 hour slog.

As previously mentioned, for mainland Europe go southern Spain. Almeria is where most of the fruit and veg is grown but Ryanair flights might be a bit irregular in January. Otherwise Malaga; will be 16⁰c to 20⁰c.

If you prefer Italy then Palermo may be OK.

We always head to the Canaries in January or February. Generally Lanzarote. It's the coolest time, but still sees temperatures in the 20's. We have a heated pool and sea swim every day.

We went to Calpe in February 2020 and we were pleasantly surprised by the weather, had a few t shirt days which we weren't expecting but overall it was too cool to swim or sunbathe.

I went to Malaga mid Feb once, and it was only 11-14c

Been to southern Spain regularly that time of year. Cold at night, and if cold in the day indoors can be a bit miserable as the heating seems more erratic. On a lovely day it’s t shirt weather .

Depends on what you want.

If you go to an Andalucian city or two (Malaga, Granada, Seville, Cordoba etc), even if it's not 'hot' the weather should be half decent and there's plenty to see and do anyway.

Or if you want a relaxing beach holiday, I think Gran Canaria (Puerto Mogan?) is reliably the warmest/driest/least windy in the winter/

Definitely the Canaries.

In mainland Europe an average temperature of 16 sounds pretty warm for January. I doubt you will get much warmer than that without leaving the continent proper.

It is worth bearing in mind that it’s the same as the average temperature of London in June.

Average temperature is always lower than average daily high, as it takes account of the much cooler overnight temperatures as well as warmer daytime temps. I think 16 is fine. It’s not sunbathing weather but you don’t get sunbathing weather in Europe in January. You’d need to be much closer to the equator or in the southern hemisphere for that.
