I often get frustrated with my DS (10) who has ASD because I feel like he is capable of socially appropriate behaviour when he wants to be but will just let himself go when he’s with me. Obviously I know about masking but in general his ASD is not severe and I think if he’s capable of not yelling at school, he’s capable to some extent at home. I am not ASD and I am a pretty different person in public compared to what I am ‘naturally’ like. At home I have to make an effort not to take out life’s frustrations on my DH and kids. So my question is, how much is it reasonable to expect my ASD kid to regulate himself at home, even if that means he’s sometimes masking? Doesn’t everyone ‘mask’ to a degree? What’s the difference for people with ASD?
