Which toilet plunger?

I want to buy my son a toilet plunger as a practical housewarming gift for moving into his first student flatshare (don't ask!). Until a few years ago I thought all toilet plungers looked like the first picture, but at home we now have one like the second picture because I was assured in the store it was "the best". I've never seen the third type until today. Anyone own one? Is it an innovative new style that beats type 2 or should I stick to what I know?

Which toilet plunger?

If a loo gets blocked, best solution is a large bucket of water poured down it . Sometimes a second one is needed.

Hmm, and sometimes a plunger is needed because the water won't go down!

Number 3 has always worked for me.

Half a cup of washing up liquid poured in the bowl, leave for an hour & flush.
