We have a disproportionately small hallway and it permanently looks like a bomb has gone off. Three kids, dog leads and treats, post etc.

How do I get it tidy?

Shoe rack? Most used pair each and the rest upstairs.

I say that as someone with a massive hall cupboard where I literally throw all the shoes and bags and still end up with some in the hall!

Saturnssister · 29/07/2023 20:49

I’m here for the answer , I don’t have space for a shoe rack , very weird skinny hall which could probably fit a shoe rack but only one which would involve a type of contortion no one would be arsed with to put their shoes away.

Mum2jenny · 29/07/2023 20:49

I put my shoes under the bed

EversoDetermined · 29/07/2023 20:52

Our hall is narrow (a foot wider than the front door) and we have recently switched from the sort of shoeracks like mini bookcases which were always overflowing to the slim Ikea ones with pull down fronts, total gamechanger. Our hall is tidy for the first time ever.

DonkeysForCourses · 29/07/2023 20:52

We have a shoe rack and a shoe cupboard. Both are too small for bug boots, for some reason. I need something big and enclosed so we can pretend to be a civilised family when we open the front door!

Big boots

x-posted, the Ikea ones don't hold boots but we put them in the cupboard under the stairs

Do you have a link please?

Something like this for children's shoes and trainers?

Have an under the stairs show cupboard built in. We did it in January and its been a game changer. We have just one pull out and it stores probably 15 pairs of shoes. If you have a bigger under the stairs space you can go for more pull outs.

Elderflower2016 · 29/07/2023 20:56

Are your stairs near the front door? Coukd you make some cupboards or drawers under there to utilise all the space and put boots under there? What about a high up shelf running along the hall if you have high ceilings to put shoes up there? Also you could alternate summer type shoes and winter and put the out of season ones upstairs…

EversoDetermined · 29/07/2023 21:09

There are several different types, we have three of the two-compartment Bissa ones next to one another (we couldn’t go higher because we have a dado rail)

We have a large rectangular wicker basket.
Theoretically, this is easier for everyone to put their shoes into than it is for them to put them neatly on the shoe rack. Actually, it is impossible for the DC to put their shoes in the basket it seems but it is at least quick for me to chuck them all in there. I always feel guilty when doing this as I stole the idea of a neighbour who I had popped into see when my DC were delightful, biddable pre-schoolers and hers were teens and she had started chucking all of the shoes in the basket and I smugly thought that I would never have to do that as my DC were going to remain as excited by everyday activities and keeping things tidy as they were then.

MiniTheMinx · 29/07/2023 22:27

We have a big wicker log basket. If I find stray boots or shoes I chuck them in there.

DonkeysForCourses · 30/07/2023 20:17

I think a log basket may be the answer. Does anyone have one they can recommend?

Trones IKEA are shallow depth pull out shoe storage.

I have a chest of drawers built into the under stairs where shoes are stored. But the shoes that are currently worn are on the door mat. One pair each.

Kellioo · 30/07/2023 20:28

I use a large open wooden box from TKMAXX, it holds about 10 pairs. The rest are kept upstairs at the bottom of wardrobes.
