Booking driving test - personal reference number

My son passed his driving theory last week and I want to book a test for him
It states on the government website

Before you startYou need your:

• UK driving licence number
• credit or debit card
• driving instructor’s personal reference number if you want to check they’re available

As we don't have a driving instructor at the moment I am presuming I can book without this number

My question
Can this number be added at a later date when we find somebody?

You don’t need to add it at all whether you have a driving instructor or not.

both my 19 and 17 year old have passed recently one taking 3 goes and they never added it.

Sorry meant to say they were both learning with driving instructors and never put the reference number in

I have no idea to be honest, as it a really not necessary to put it in at any point

Once you have a booking, you don't need the driving instructors number.

The number essentially let's the instructor put in his avaliablity so that it will only let your son book a test when the instructor is available. Eg if thr instructor doesn't work before 8.30am, or on Saturdays etc, you won't be able yo book these.

Once you've booked, there's no reason to add the number retrospectively. You csn add it when amending the booking.
