Greek (Corfu) supermarkets and what to buy!

Following on from all the tantalising goodies on the French supermarket thread, please can I request the same for Corfiot supermarkets? I am really looking forwards to going (assuming we get there) but have not been to Greece for 25 years so have no idea what things to look for. We will be near Barbati and all advice much appreciated!

As you are going to be near Barbati I can recommend a shop in Nissaki which is only a short drive away.
It's a small but friendly supermarket there calked Aphrodite's and next door is a fantastic artisan bakery and Venetian patisserie ( there are also lots of Venetian bakeries in Corfu Town) We went everyday on the wait home from the beach and spent a fortune!

Orange pie is to die for and most supermarkets seem to have it. I believe it's a speciality of Corfu.

Other than that we always buy ingredients for greek salad and big tubs of houmous.

If you want restaurant recommendations - Toula's is Agni is fabulous ( you can get a taxi boat from Barbati if you arrange it with the restaurant ) and Vitamins in Nissaki is lovely with friendly owners.

Oooh we’ve just been in Nissaki just few mins in the coast from Barbarti. Do you have a car? As the above poster mentioned the bakery is good. But also a supermarket called Katerina’s as you come into Nissaki from Barbarti it’s on the left hand side. Inside she has a fridge with mini magnum type ice creams you buy by the weight and stuff like orange cake and lemon meringue pie. She also does spinach and cheese pies for savoury. I saw various Greek skincare products but wasn’t in the market for buying.

I'd stock up on:

  • dried oregano, as the stuff here is tasteless
  • rose jam, if you can find it
  • mountain tea 'tsai tou vouno' - you want it in big bunches shoved into a clear plastic bag with the most basic of label stickers, not prettily prepackaged. Probably the only floral tea I personally like.
  • 'Caprice' chocolate wafer biscuit rolls, in red tin. Maybe 10 of these, as you'll eat about 2 on the plane alone.
  • 3Bit chocolate bars
  • all the cheeses!

Oh we stayed at a villa near Aphrodites. Very friendly. Seem to remember a butcher in Barbati?

Also second the recommendation for Vitamins restaurant in Nissaki. We are there several times, amazing views and the friendliest staff.
