How much does therapy really help?

I’m thinking about getting therapy but it’s a pretty big financial commitment in these times for a single mother on a low wage.

I’m your typical people pleaser - too much empathy, not enough resilience, anxiety issues, care way too much what people think and get really stressed out with conflict. Things are tense at work right now with a CF colleague and I haven’t been able to eat or sleep properly for weeks because of it. There’s nothing that can be done about it really and I’m going to run into problems like this throughout my life anyway so I feel like the best course of action is to go to therapy and learn to be more assertive/resilient so that I can just ignore her without getting really stressed out by the situation.

Does therapy really work though? I’m so skeptical that an anxious mess like me can actually toughen up when I’ve been soft for so much of my life. Would love to hear from anyone who’s been helped massively by therapy, anybody who used to be massive people pleasers with low self esteem and can now laugh anything off or just stick their middle finger up at CF’s and would-be bullies then just happily get on with their day. I’ve always admired people like this so much.
