When did Calpol get invented?

I was just reminiscing about being ill as a child and my mum giving me a dissolvable aspirin in a glass of orange squash. It tasted vile!

I don't remember taking paracetamol for pain relief until I started my periods at 13, and even then I had to ask my mum to get some in and then learn to swallow them whole! Initially she gave me a small glass of brandy and hot water- odd choice for a teenager, but we had no painkillers in the house!

I'm just wondering a what point did calpol become so ubiquitous, and aspirin stopped being used as pain relief in children?

I guessing it might have been the 80s at some point?

I remember a funny tasting powder wrapped in folded paper. Beecham’s maybe?
Also Rinstead pastilles for ulcers. Yuk!

ThisIsTrifficult · 26/07/2023 20:20

Born early 80's and I had medised! Delicious stuff.

Armeins · 26/07/2023 20:23

I don't think I was given anything for pain or fever as a child. I do remember having lucozade though, only time I ever had it was when I was ill. The smell of it makes me feel sick now.

@NuffSaidSam !!
For anyone wanting them I’m sure we’ve had Throatiest gums from Home Bargains!
My mum preferred Zubes or Victory V though. Kind of Fisherman’s Friend-ish.

Only other medicine I remember was something that supposedly tasted of banana and was really grainy. Probably an antibiotic of some sort?
I think that might be amoxicillin

GellerYeller · 26/07/2023 20:25

Buttercup Syrup! It’s all coming back to me now. Probably next to an antique tin of Germolene in the medicine box(probably a repurposed Margarine or ice cream tub)😂

AnkleWidget · 26/07/2023 20:26

Junior Disprol!
Then they realised aspirin in under 16’s could have a rare and serious side effect.

They did start making Karvol Capsules again but they are not the same, no longer that lovely pine odour.

I had Calpol and Calpol Six Plus (early 80’s) and the original always tasted better!

AnkleWidget · 26/07/2023 20:27

Also “malt extract” to improve our appetites!

ReluctantFishLady · 26/07/2023 20:27

I was a child of the 80s and can confirm that crushed paracetamol in a spoon of milk tastes as bad as it sounds. I can still taste it now. In fact I don't think I've had anything as revolting since.

I assume it was much cheaper than Calpol as we never had that in our house.

MustBeThursday · 26/07/2023 20:27

@ThisIsTrifficult i was born in 88 and we had Medised too. Any time I've mentioned it in conversation no one seems to remember it! The old version of bonjela used to taste nice too. Occasionally I had some kind of disgusting dissolvable paracetamol/possibly aspirin which I have a clear memory of drinking from a Barbie plastic glass. That and buttercup syrup for coughs.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 26/07/2023 20:28

Urrgh, rinstead pastilles! My GM was always trying to force those on us. That and covering us in bloody olbas oil if anyone even thought about sneezing.

Snozzlemaid · 26/07/2023 20:29

I was born in 1972 and I definitely had Calpol as a child. I have strong memories of the taste linked with the feeling of burning up with a high temperature.

DanceMumTaxi · 26/07/2023 20:30

Oh yes, junior disprin, that was awful stuff. @GellerYeller you can still get Tyrozets, I’ve got some in the medicine box.

GellerYeller · 26/07/2023 20:31

I remember getting antibiotic tablets from the GP as a youngster. Mum crushed them in a teaspoon of Jif syrup. Like Jif lemon but was chocolate or strawberry/raspberry(?) flavour to squeeze onto ice cream. I don’t know anyone who remembers it though.

GellerYeller · 26/07/2023 20:31

@DanceMumTaxi in the orange tubes? Loved them.

QuestionableMouse · 26/07/2023 20:32

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 26/07/2023 20:13

Same, on both counts!

Only other medicine I remember was something that supposedly tasted of banana and was really grainy. Probably an antibiotic of some sort?

So glad you said that! I can remember throwing it up but no one else seems to remember the horrible stuff!

Wasn't amoxicillin, because I can remember having the grainy one for tonsillitis and mam getting it changed to a amoxicillin!

CashmereDarling · 26/07/2023 20:34

I remember liquid Panadol.
Can also remember orange disprin, they were really yummy!

QuestionableMouse · 26/07/2023 20:34

Oh yes, junior disprin, that was awful stuff. @GellerYeller you can still get Tyrozets, I’ve got some in the medicine box.

You can't buy them any more they're basically banned now! https://chloralieve.com/information-hub/can-you-still-buy-tyrozets/

Can you still buy Tyrozets? - Chloralieve

Antibiotics are more regulated than ever before. Chloralieve investigates which throat lozenges you can still purchase and which are most effective.

GellerYeller · 26/07/2023 20:36

I also had pholcodine for coughs, oink, didn’t taste as nice as it looked. Also banned now I think. Not grainy though? Unless that was sugary residue?

DanceMumTaxi · 26/07/2023 20:36

@GellerYeller yeah, those are the ones. They’re in a plastic orange tube with a pop off lid. But I’ve just looked them up and it seems they’ve been discontinued, so you were right. Goodness knows how long mine have been in the medicine box.

GellerYeller · 26/07/2023 20:36

Oink? Pink 😂

CashmereDarling · 26/07/2023 20:36

Tyrozets were not that nice but worked really well. I had a lot of tonsillitis as a child.

MustBeThursday · 26/07/2023 20:36

Oh and Superted multivitamins. They were the best. Adult multivitamins just don't measure up!

GellerYeller · 26/07/2023 20:37

@DanceMumTaxi 😱

SushiSuave · 26/07/2023 20:38

I was born in 1990 and don't specifically remember calpol, but I do remember the delicious tixylix!! I used to want to drink that stuff by the bottle.
