Book recommendations- periods/nutrition/sport

Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for a book aimed at a young teenager basically about living healthily. Giving information on the importance of eating healthily (her diet is terrible, she seems to almost be malnourished, and her parents have no clue /don't care about healthy nutrition and e.g. let her eat spoonfuls of sugar), looking after yourself, periods and hormonal changes etc.
Importance of sport in being healthy.
Also touching on the mental health side - how sport and diet are important.
Plus something with an explanation on "normal" relationships, both friends and romantic, as she has no example of that from home. Also no experience as she is home schooled and very isolated. Something explaining drugs, alcohol etc Basically all thing a teenager going to secondary school would or should know.

Not a book (and caveat, I've still to listen to it) but there's a BBC Sounds podcast I've downloaded called 28ish days later. It's an in depth daily look at women's menstrual cycle.

Given that we are given a rudimentary overview of menstruation during puberty it could be a starting point. I had to do a lot of reading up when I was TTC and actually it was fascinating the way each day something new happened in a well designed process, like women are a high tech machine - which we are!

While it's not addressing nutrition or exercise right away, those things might be a natural follow on from knowing how our bodies work - or should work - and hopefully might trigger an interest in maintaining an overall healthy wellness with a little dose of female empowerment which is never a bad thing!

Oh that sound interesting, I might see if i can find it.

It won't be any use for the girl though as she's not allowed to listen to anything unapproved or allowed access to the internet. I'm hoping I could manage to smuggle a book to her!

@MJGGG some of the reviews say that it focuses a lot on ttc. Do you agree? I'm not sure that's what I'm after, I don't want to be accused of giving her ideas!

She's a young teenager, I want something aimed at that age, not adult.

I have "taking charge of your fertility" but feel she's too young for something like that.

you seem to have met an unusual HE teen none of the ones I know are isolated

InterferingOutsider · 26/07/2023 20:48

@GoatsareGOAT thanks, will take a look. You wouldn't meet the isolated ones would you! The only "hobby" she's allowed to go to is a group one of her parents run or to Bible study. Apart from that she's home all day. Not allowed to use her phone unless supervised, not allowed out alone or any of her money to spend.

I suppose so!
Sounds like the HE is being used as a part of isolating her (indoctrinating her?)

OTOH maybe bible group isn't too bad - my brother & friends used to go to SU camp because it was the best way to meet girls 🤣
