Twitter- What IS the point?

Seriously. I admit that I joined years ago and used it for work. Purely for work.

But when I look at it now, I'm shocked at how so many 'ordinary people' are announcing births, marriages, deaths and really personal stuff to a whole load of people who don't know them.

I mean, just why? Even if they get a sympathetic reply, how does that help when it's a total stranger, just passing time on social media?

Maybe they just like connecting with other people over happy news?

Twitter's called X now.

I've seen death announcements in my professional circle(s) which tbh were very helpful for guiding colleagues towards obituaries, funerals etc.

because while people say about x/twitter bring a cesspit, actually there’s more people on there looking for good news to celebrate/ready to commiserate, share ideas, show fun stuff etc. you mostly only find bad stuff in the trending sections where people go to be ignorant. Go check out baking sections, book sections, cats, dogs etc!

Lots of good things about it if you follow the right people, use filters and block liberally. I love Books Twitter, Cats Twitter and Writing Twitter. I also find it very useful for work. And it helps me now I mostly WFH to find some community.I have also met people from Twitter and made longlasting friends.

I don't even know how to use it but want too. I need a dummies guide !

I will say that it has become increasingly hateful and rewards outrage now. I have cut down as I can't bear to see any more pix from Gaza.

In my (limited 😆) experience twitter tends to be for people who smugly claim they don't "do" social media but then like to go into an echo chamber with other usually very leftie "non social media" using folk. They think they're more couth than the average Facebook user see. Like I said...just in my experience 🤪.

Yes, I so wish there were books on these programs - I joined Discord but seem to be lost on it - or not on the right stuff. Wanted to discuss the 'And the rest is politics' podcast.
Have got the hand of Reddit - but Facebook gives me anxiety - who sees it, how to post photos, so much on the front page - just hopeless.
This is probaby why I'm on MN everyday - understand that as joined at the start of it.

Most of them say ' Contact your friends and chat away ......' or similar - I've hardly any friends and I see the few there are face to face. And we are all getting on a bit so don't spend alot of time on phones.

I only use it for lurking. I follow some weird and truly bizarre people, not because I endorse their views but because it exposes me to opinions outside of my 'bubble'. I love a good eye roll at some of the mad conspiracists or the People Who Are Perpetually Offended. Great entertainment!

Can't remember the last time I actually tweeted (or X'd or whatever they call it now)

TroysMammy · 17/12/2023 08:23

It was a Godsend when my train was delayed and I knew what was going on but I haven't a clue how to use it. In my opinion it's just full of tweets and twats.

QueSyrahSyrah · 17/12/2023 08:23

I stick strictly to my 'following' section rather than 'for you' so I only see content from people I've chosen to follow.

Most of them are local to my area so it's great for local news, opinions, advice etc. I've met some lovely people through Twitter (I'll go to my grave calling it Twitter).
