Extra job & tax

I work PT for myself and bring in just about £5k pa.

Also just started a different extra role to bring in £, just £120 per month.

As it’s a second job - how will it affect what tax I owe pls?

you'll be charged basic rate tax on the second job, at least initially. . however, you can contact HMRC and ask them to split your tax code over both jobs.

Seems tough when I earn so little in the first place!

You’ll be below the tax free allowance, but it might take a while to get everything sorted with payroll/HMRC

You shouldn't end up paying any tax at all as your total pay pa will be below the personal allowance.

However your new employer might automatically deduct 20% emergency tax. You should be able to ring HMRC who will do the necessary to stop any further payments (by adjusting your code).

Then you'll be entitled to get back any emergency tax you've paid - although I'm not sure whether that happens asap or after the end of the year (next April).

If you've a government gateway id (which I imagine you will have from your self employment) you can log on and check what tax code you have recorded from your employer. If they have overestimated your total income and have you on the wrong tax code you can correct and HMRC will recalculate. If you get taxed more than you should you will get it refunded.

Thank you everyone, bit of a relief! 😁
