Best place to buy refurbished mobile phone?

I’m going to get my mum a new phone, she doesn’t need anything too fancy as long as it has a decent enough camera and she can do her crossword app she’ll be happy.

I’ve came across the website Back Market who seem to get good reviews. Would anyone recommend them or any other company to buy a refurbished phone from? Thanks

I bought an iPhone 12 and a couple of older iPads from the Amazon Renewed store - all been great so far.

CEX as they come with a 2-year warranty.

Or eBay, but a business seller / professional phone refurbisher that's properly registered to refurb the phone brands, and offers a warranty.

My children have both had phones from Back Market - great condition and quick delivery.

Why does it have to be a refurbished model?

EmpressaurusOfCats · 24/07/2023 12:36

I came to say Giffgaff too, I bought a refurbished phone from them last month & it’s like new. I went for refurbished both for the price and because it seems more eco-friendly.

Got one for MIL from BackMarket. Very happy

CheersToMe · 24/07/2023 13:01

Another vote for giffgaff. We've had 4 refurbished iPhones, all good.

Why does it have to be a refurbished model?

It’s cheaper and better for the environment.

Lots of good suggestions here, thanks

Why does it have to be a refurbished model?

Why would you ever buy a new phone?

Avoid CEX

IloveJudgeJudy · 24/07/2023 18:07

I’ve also used Back Market. I did return one model as I’d bought the wrong model, ie my mistake. Had absolutely no trouble getting a refund. My second phone was great. It was also for my mother.

Swashbuckled · 24/07/2023 18:16

Music Magpie.

Avoid CEX

My son has had a couple from CEX which have been fine.

whatdoidonowffs · 24/07/2023 18:28

Daughter has one from back market no issues at all

araresight · 24/07/2023 19:23

I've bought two from the Amazon Renewed store and had no issues at all. They have pretty good customer service too and are quick to replace/refund if there's any dramas.

Music Magpie.

I always use them too. They’ve always been fantastic condition and come with a warranty.
I had one that lost charge really quickly and they supplied the return postage label and the refund was in my account shortly after me dropping it off at the parcel place. No quibble.

VisionsOfSplendour · 24/07/2023 19:37

I've had two from Game one of which has problems and they replaced it no questions asked

The other one (not an iphone) is going strong over 3 years later

But they can allI only sell what they get in and are only as good as the one phone you choose. You're better to find the one with the best customer service if anything goes wrong

WhosBob · 24/07/2023 19:51

My current phone is from BackMarket. I got it quite cheap considering its a fairly new model. They delivered it the next day and I've had no problems with it so far. I think you can return it within 30 days if youre not satisfied. I'd highly recommend them.

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 24/07/2023 19:54

Thumbs up for Music Magpie, they've been super reliable and always better than described. No problem with returns either. They have a store on ebay.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/07/2023 20:09

Avoid Back Market. They actually sell phones on behalf of other sellers which they don’t make clear.

DS1 has bought 3 phones from them. 2 have had no problems at all, however 3 weeks ago he bought a Google Pixel which came with a blocker on because they’d not restored it back to all the factory settings and removed the last person’s details. It had been sold by Back Market on behalf of QwikFone. He, therefore, arranged for it to be sent back.

Back Market request that it’s sent back via DHL which DS1 did by dropping it off at one of their collection points. He got an email and text, with tracking, to confirm that. DHL lost it in transit but said that as Back Market was the customer they’d reimburse them who could, in turn, refund DS1. Back Market refused because DS1 doesn’t have a paper receipt from the drop off point. DHL don’t give one and have confirmed that to Back Market. All Back Market say to DS1 is to report the loss of the phone to the police. They don’t answer the phone of you try to ring, you email or live chat and they just send back a link to the police website.

DS1 is banging his head off a brick wall with them and is now trying to do a charge back with the bank. It’s absolutely criminal what Back Market are doing.

I personally use giffgaff refurbished and never had any issues.

MyCatHasStaff · 24/07/2023 20:17

Another vote for Music Magpie. I've used them a few times, no issues whatsoever.
