What is the best compliment you have ever received?

I've seen a couple of threads recently about horrible things you've overheard someone say about you, or back-handed compliments, so thought it was time for a more positive thread!

What is the best compliment / nicest thing anyone has ever said about you or to you?

One of my favourite ever colleagues said to me how impressed he was that I could talk to anyone, however senior/important, and always seemed comfortable with public speaking. At the time I really didn't feel that way, but it gave me the confidence boost I needed and now I do feel it!

Was told at work I had a lovely soothing voice by a patient which was nice. DH often says he loves my voice also. Bit of a random compliment but nice nonetheless. Smile

Haggisfish3 · 24/07/2023 11:15

on a zoom event and a man saw me and said ‘gosh, what a beautiful smile’ and another person said ‘I love your energy’. Up till then I had thought ‘other people’ were very busy etc and then I realised I am one of those other people! I give compliments all the time.

Leapintothelightning · 24/07/2023 11:16

I was singing at work (in a nursery I don't just beat songs out in the office!) and a colleague told me I had a lovely singing voice.

At the gym I was trying a new deadlift weight and a PT said well done when I managed it. I suppose not technically a compliment but it made my day!

QueefQueen80s · 24/07/2023 11:19

From my managers saying I make peoples lives happier and they wish they could clone me (support worker)

From my ex saying he couldn't wish for a better woman to be the mum of his kids in this one life on earth

From various people in my life, at different times, saying being around me is an ethereal experience. I don't know why as I'm awkward af

QueefQueen80s · 24/07/2023 11:21

Oh and I make sure I compliment at least one stranger a day. It goes a long way and they might remember it forever!

MammaTo · 24/07/2023 11:27

I don’t know if this counts but I remember hearing my grandad (who I loved so much) say to my mum “I love all my grandkids but MamaTo is special, she’s got something special” and I honestly don’t think I’ve ever felt as happy as hearing someone I held to such high esteem say that.

This thread is nice to read 😊 I can't recall ever having been complimented but to be fair I have always been fat, never been pretty, I have alopecia and I'm not clever or funny which I think is what a person is usually complimented on.
I do enjoy complimenting people, I have a weird theory that people who are good in any way should be told.

I'd like to compliment you on your inspiring outlook on life. If everybody thought like you the world would be a much better place.

I bet you are beautiful on the inside and outside.

MorrisZapp · 24/07/2023 13:35

When my niece was a little toot, her mum went out to see a comedian. What's a comedian? asked the wee toot. Oh it's someone who stands in front of people and says funny stuff to make them all laugh said my sister.

'You mean like Auntie Morris?'

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

ItsMyAeroplane · 25/07/2023 00:15

What am I missing? Why would you be flattered if someone thought you and your family was Italian?

Because being mistaken for a stylish southern European with a tan and dark hair IS flattering IMO.

Amiable · 25/07/2023 00:33

Such a lot of lovely replies! Thanks everyone, this has really put a smile on my face (another compliment for you all!)

My late husband's first words to me were 'Did anyone ever tell you that you look like Audrey Hepburn? '
I mean I had to marry him after that didn't I ?
I never thought I did but someone else did make the remark some years later so it must be true... at least in the sense that I might have had the same style of hair or something 🤣

marshmallowfinder · 25/07/2023 00:46

You're the best manager we never had. 😭

ilovepixie · 25/07/2023 00:51

I'm fat and frumpy and basically a bit of a mess. I was walking down canal street in Manchester. I had my hair short and black and 2 drag queens shouted over hello beautiful you look like Liza Minnelli!
It made my day!

Icequeen01 · 25/07/2023 00:56

A work colleague last week told me I was one of their most favourite people in the world.

Yarsvi · 25/07/2023 02:16

An older work colleague once said to me, "I wasn't lucky enough to have a daughter but if I had, I would hope she would be just like you."

MrsMarieMopps · 25/07/2023 06:19

This thread is lovely. I like the ones where posters have their parenting complimented, because no one ever tells you that you're doing it right!

AlwaysWantingIceLollies · 25/07/2023 06:55

I had one last week from my driving instructor. I'm a very nervous driver so have moved to automatic, second lesson in, as he drove away from dropping me home, he shouts out his window, "you're really good you know, don't forget that".
Whether or not I'm really good, he gave me a confidence boost.

BCBird · 25/07/2023 06:58

Someone told me, you smile with your eyes. Loved that.

Sweetpea1532 · 26/07/2023 18:37

A few years back I attended my 30th Secondary school reunion.
It was the first reunion that was integrated...(I grew up in the deep south US and the schools had been integrated when I was in primary. Im white)
Although the schools were integrated, no social events , churches, etc. were...And each racial group lived on their own side of town..we even had our own shops😳..
So before this, the class reunions had been held privately and were segregated. Fortunately, the organizers decided that separate reunions were ludicrous in this day and age especially since we'd all gone through years of school together and were friends then.
When I walked in the door of the venue a black classmate whom I hadn't seen in 30 years ran up to me, grabbed me, and said the most touching thing ...her comment..
Sweetpea, I have really missed seeing you...when school was over and you left to go to uni, it was like the lights had gone out in our town.
Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King

AperolWhore · 26/07/2023 18:46

Lots of work ones but as a female in a male environment it’s easy to impress but my favourite personal one was when I was 8 months pregnant and a very good looking man (I mean insanely good looking, he looked like he’s just stepped off an aftershave commercial) came up to me in King’s Cross station and said, apologies if this is too forward but you are the most beautiful pregnant woman I’ve ever seen and my wife’s had 4 kids!

I was so flustered by how good looking he was and his compliment I just said thank you and walked off. After spending 4 hours in 6” heels presenting to a client I was absolutely shattered and that made me day!

@Sweetpea1532 what an unforgettable memory ☺️

I met a woman at a work event, she was lovely and we got it off.

A couple of weeks later at another work event I saw her and ran up to her to say hello and she introduced me to the group she was with by saying. “This is Chelsea, she spreads sunshine!”

Chelsea26 · 26/07/2023 20:38

*HIT it off!

I didn’t get off with her although she was lovely 😂

HowDidWeGetHome · 26/07/2023 20:43

I had psychotherapy a few years ago. At the end of the last session my therapist told me he'd never met anyone who had been through as much adversity as me to have their life so together. He said it wasn't usual. I guess all therapists sigh off by saying something lovely to their clients but those words mean so much to me. I will remember them to my dying day.
