What is the best compliment you have ever received?

I've seen a couple of threads recently about horrible things you've overheard someone say about you, or back-handed compliments, so thought it was time for a more positive thread!

What is the best compliment / nicest thing anyone has ever said about you or to you?

One of my favourite ever colleagues said to me how impressed he was that I could talk to anyone, however senior/important, and always seemed comfortable with public speaking. At the time I really didn't feel that way, but it gave me the confidence boost I needed and now I do feel it!

Totally vain ones 🙄

One of my friends keeps asking me “are you sure you don’t have Italian in your family?”, and some work colleagues saw us out one day and said they thought we were an Italian family. I’m flattered.

Also, I was in an airport one day and this guy was perusing women’s perfumes. I smiled at him and suggested one. He said it was very expensive and that if it was me, he’d buy it, but it was just for a friend.

Totally vain 😉

What am I missing? Why would you be flattered if someone thought you and your family was Italian?

A little girl I was looking after said that she wasn't worried about trying something she thought was very difficult and scary because "I know you'll always keep me safe"

neilyoungismyhero · 24/07/2023 02:06

Said by a transport manager to my agency 'she's absolutely brilliant, a super star can't wait to employ her properly.'
The bastards never did despite me working my arse off and being really good at the job.
Midwife after my 3rd baby delivered like the previous 2 in just over 2 hours - 'you're really pretty good at this mum'

Geppili · 24/07/2023 02:08

I was childless and looking after a friend's adorable 3 year old daughter so her mum could have a night off. I tried so hard to make the evening lovely and calm and caring. Did her favourite meal, played games etc. Then I helped her do her teeth. Then gave her a warm flannel to wash her face and hands. Then I wrapped bothher bare feet in hot warm flannels and wiped them clean for her. She loved it so much and put her palm on my cheek and said "Geppili you are so kind, you are like Jesus. He washed his friends' feet, didn't he?"

I will never forget that moment!

I was told by a women who lived over the road from me as a teenager when my children were little " and she now has children of her own .. she said "I use to watch you with your little ones and think I want to be like her as a mum , you could just see you adored your children and you love for them poured out ... I was so surprised... I had my children in my early 20s and was a single mum it's amazing what people see in you

One day my MIL bought me flowers and told me that I am a wonderful mother.

Both my daughters work at the same place, different roles, but both have been promoted to heads of their department. First time I met their boss he thanked me for raising two remarkable women, who he feels privileged to have work for him.

Rockbird · 24/07/2023 03:33

Walking through our shopping centre pushing DD2 in her pram, stopped to fiddle with something and an elderly woman stopped, smiled at me and said 'you look so lovely and friendly', patted me on the shoulder and walked off.

A very shallow one, I've always been overweight but I lost a lot of weight for my wedding. Family came down the night before and we met in the hotel. As I walked into the bar my fab uncle called out 'oi skinny!' No one had commented before and I'd always been ridiculed for my weight (not by him) and had no confidence. I still remember the buzz I got from that.

pintofginplz · 24/07/2023 03:39

A lady told me that I lit up a room when I walked in, never been a confident person, and her comment really made a difference to me when I needed it.

This thread is nice to read 😊 I can't recall ever having been complimented but to be fair I have always been fat, never been pretty, I have alopecia and I'm not clever or funny which I think is what a person is usually complimented on.
I do enjoy complimenting people, I have a weird theory that people who are good in any way should be told.

You sound very kind.

crew2022 · 24/07/2023 03:46

Someone once wrote in my leaving card 'without doubt you've been the best line manager I've ever had".

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/07/2023 09:11

From dh years ago, after we’d had a BiL in very unhappy marital circumstances, to stay.
‘Thank you for making a nice home.’
And he didn’t mean the decor or my standard of housework.

Thehonestybox · 24/07/2023 09:16

"I've never seen anyone fall flat on their face and get up with such speed that no one would even remember it happened"

Quisquam · 24/07/2023 09:22

A Great Ormond St Hospital consultant said to me:

“You are the best advocate in the world for DD!”

I’d drafted a formal complaint letter about a public sector agency’s treatment (or lack of it) of DD and sent it to my lawyer for his information, he said

”You really know how to write a complaint!”

Fairyliz · 24/07/2023 09:29

I was appointed to get an organisation through a piece of useless but necessary work.
When we passed the assessment with flying colours, my boss got me a bunch of flowers and a card saying I was the best appointment she had ever made.

MojoJojo71 · 24/07/2023 09:31

When I split from DD’s dad I remember saying ‘I can’t believe I’m going to be a single parent again’ and my DS (18 at the time, DD 2 and different dads) said to me ‘Don’t worry mum you’re really good at it’ ❤️

LaMaG · 24/07/2023 09:32

At about 18 a guy I knew was really drunk and complimenting me and I was a bit drunk too so kind of took no notice. He acted really wierd around me afterwards and when I asked someone what was wrong they told me he was embarrassed. He had told me I was beautiful and had always thought it but couldn't believe he had said it out loud. It was his reaction that made it so sweet.

2 days ago I was paying at the supermarket til and the lady behind me offered a 10 voucher, there was a limit and she had 1 extra. It was so unnecessary and kind and I thanked her. As I was packing up my DS10 turned to her and said 'thank you, really it is so kind of you'. The woman at the til said what a lovely boy you really have brought him up well. I was so happy I was bursting with pride. My other boy had a lot of behaviour issues and I am used to feeling the worlds judgement on my parenting so it really meant a lot to me.

beguilingeyes · 24/07/2023 10:03

There used to be a shampoo advert with the tagline 'the girl with the sun in her hair'. Someone said that about me once and it felt lovely.

nessiegloam · 24/07/2023 10:07

Lots connected to beauty especially when younger, but I used to do beauty (make up products) and hair modelling. I would be asked if I was a model, and people would comment on my face. Downside of feeling uncomfortable (older or entitled men) or rude people not thinking I was intelligent.

More women than men openly compliment me on appearance as I age (late 30s). A few weeks ago I was asked if I was a dancer (I am but only as a hobby) and told I had a beautiful face.

I get the most pleasure being complimented about things I'm good at. Knowledge of literature, politics, historical dates.

onlyoneoftheregimentinstep · 24/07/2023 10:11

In my 60s, on holiday with my adult DD. As she followed me up the steps away from the pool she told me I had "A very pert little bum"!

user64827777 · 24/07/2023 11:04

"Wow! You don't look like a mum!" "You don't look like you have kids!"

I get that a lot and I bloody love it. I take pride in how I look and it makes me happy when people are surprised I tell them I have children.

SunscreenCentral · 24/07/2023 11:11

I was sitting outside a café reading. A man passing by on his bicycle stopped and said "I find you very beautiful" smiled and cycled off. (In France, naturally)

SunscreenCentral · 24/07/2023 11:12

(Ps., I had just turned 50)
