I have 10kg of out of date drinking chocolate

Cafe near me is closing down. They are selling off all their stuff. I love Cadbury hot chocolate and they were selling their massive 2kg tubs off for £5. Unopened. Bearing in mind a small tub is around £3 now, I thought what a bargain. I bought 5 tubs.
Unopened.
Noticed today the use by date is July 21st... 2021!
Please tell me I won't die if I use it!

It will be fine. Enjoy it!

hilariousnamehere · 23/07/2023 09:37

It's cocoa powder and sugar, you'll be fine - sugar keeps indefinitely!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/07/2023 09:37

I would think it will be fine, but it will take you a long time to get through that, I imagine! Can you donate it to family, friends, neighbours? People not hung on best before dates (is it best before rather than use by?).

I imagine the worst outcome is that the fat has gone a bit manky, and if they aren't open it won't have been able to oxidise so I think that would be fairly unlikely. I imagine the difficulty will be eating 10kg of hot chocolate before it's decades out of date rather than just years?!

If you use 20g per mug of hot chocolate you have 500 mugs worth!

KingKhazi · 23/07/2023 09:41

The weirdest thing is, I bought them Friday. Which was 21st. They were exactly 2 years out of date!

I have adhd. I'm impulsive. Most people would have bought 1, maybe 2 tubs. Not me. I bought the lot.

If the local residents who use the cafe start turning into zombies, vampires etc I'd throw it away - failing enjoy at your leisure !

Loverofoxbowlakes · 23/07/2023 09:47

No wonder the cafe is closing if their stock management is so bad!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/07/2023 09:49

It'll be fine have it in my cupboard for years.

MeinKraft · 23/07/2023 09:50

Clearly the cafe has been serving it and presumably with no ill effects Grin

heldinadream · 23/07/2023 09:52

Ha ha - I'm sitting in a car munching my way through some three year out of date gluten-free Bourbon biscuits.
And the other day I got some very old bacon out of the freezer and ate it over 2 days.
Still alive OP!

Cupcakequeen75 · 23/07/2023 09:53

We buy the 1kg tubs from Costco and they last a long time, would take us an age to get through 2kg of the stuff let alone multiple tubs! 😆

That said, I am with the others when it comes to use-by dates and would quite happily drink it.

NuffSaidSam · 23/07/2023 09:53

Are they closing down because of all the food poisoning cases they've been linked with? Or all the mysterious hot chocolate based deaths?

So a year and a half's if its only one drink a day.....

LaurieFairyCake · 23/07/2023 10:00

That doesn't go off unopened

And the most important thing is if it went off you'd know, it would taste funny

I'd enjoy that stuff for a decade - I love hot chocolate in the winter

Perhaps consider perfecting a brownie recipe to use it up quicker? (And sell them?)

noblegiraffe · 23/07/2023 10:02

Hot chocolate won't have a use by, it'll have a best before.

Which means it might not taste as good but it's still fine to drink.

I love this! I would probably be the type of person that would want to buy it all but talk myself out of it 😒😂

Destinedforfakeness · 23/07/2023 10:06

I'd use it still.

1dayatatime · 23/07/2023 10:10

It all depends on how it was stored, if you take it out of the tub and leave open to air and microorganisms then it will spoil.

But assuming its still in the tub and unless the chocolate was contaminated with microorganisms to begin with there should be no issue with microbial spoilage, even after 20 years, although it might not taste as nice.

But with an expiry date of the 21st July 2023 you really shouldn't have any problem and the worst that could happen is that it doesn't taste as good.
