Am I being unrealistic? How old are you, and how much do you earn?

Doing my tax return and depressed at how little my self employment brings in.
I have a degree in the arts from a RG university and over 20 years experience in the workplace I am 45 ffs and barely scraping £1200 a month
But am barely making any money

What do you do and how have you got there and how can I charge more for what I do?

Ooo "specialist cleaner" sounds interesting. Hoarders? Crime scenes? Laboratories?

I’m an infection control cleaner, who also loves to work nights, but basically will clean what others won’t for decent money. Having extra skills to be a caretaker/maintenance also helps. Trained and qualified. Cleaners/janitors can earn good money and work part time if you are good at it. But it’s not for everyone.

This is an interesting pivot. Thank you.

Private message if you want. This is what I do. So happy to share what I know.

Public sector, 20 years experience, non managerial £29k, stuck in my band (seniors get £40-50k) - like most people I know in real life, not Mumsnet though...

ThisIsACoolUserName · 22/07/2023 22:26

39, Head of BD in a regional city, £70k.

I have a University degree in an unrelated subject and 18 years' experience.

I'kepbeen careful to keep my CV very streamlined, only ever working in one industry as I've climbed the ranks and moved from one business to another, and did a 10 year stint with one of the biggest and best companies in the world in my industry - and those two factors make me very employable.

ThisIsACoolUserName · 22/07/2023 22:27

Clingfilm · 22/07/2023 22:27

Oh, I'm 42 btw

Intriguedbythis · 22/07/2023 22:27

I am 32 and I make 10-12,000€ a month average
via a holiday experience company I started when I moved to Europe with 3,000£ & the clothes on my back age 23. I will say that’s from a mixture of very hard work ( no maternity leave and 7 days weeks for first 3-4 years ) However it WAS also a LOT of luck / right place right time and it would be very disingenuous for me to pretend otherwise.

HotSince82 · 22/07/2023 22:31

I'm 40, nurse by profession now in pharma.

Take home approx £2900 after tax, NI, pension, student loan.

Startrekkeruniverse · 22/07/2023 22:36

I’m 12, earn £750k per year and work 3.2 hours per week.

Feel like I’m underpaid but can’t be arsed to push myself harder.

51, have a degree from a RG university, earn nothing as disabled and haven't been able to find work for almost 20 years. DH, 42, £27k, works for council.

Heatherbell1978 · 22/07/2023 22:40

I'm also 45 and on a salary of £76k. Although at the moment I'm only taking home £2200 net as I put 40% into my pension, £150 into sharesave schemes and have a car through salary sacrifice. Because of the big company I work for, it's always been me that's used the company benefits so for a while it was huge amounts of childcare vouchers. So I earn a decent wage but it never feels like! DH is same age and earns £90k

70sTomboy · 22/07/2023 22:41

56 here and on 24k. Retail. Wasted opportunities and poor decision-making as a young woman, screwed myself over.
Earn no more now than 2 years ago as a manager in retail. The differential has decreased.

70sTomboy · 22/07/2023 22:42

Oh, and DH on state pension and PIP.
Not exactly rolling in it.

Want to add another ‘non-megabucks’ post for balance. I did my UG and masters at RG unis, arts subjects. Age 33, take home pay £2200 a month. University role, non teaching.
