Paperwork Cull

Smugasabug · 22/07/2023 10:30

I’m going to have a major paperwork cull, I’ve got years of all gas/ electricity statements, car paperwork , bank statements, payslips and wondering exactly what I should be keeping?
also would appreciate any storage ideas for the stuff I need to keep.
Thanks

How far back you save it is really up to you. To avoid paper in future, you would be best going digital so all your accounts are online. You can then download statements, invoices, payslips to a cloud file and have a back up onto a tablet or similar. If you do that quarterly it won't be a big job.

Thank you , I’m hoping to avoid paper altogether going forward

Think about what tit might need in the future? As I claim mileage for example I'm supposed to keep fuel receipts. Sometimes you need 3 years bank statements but not sure that's even a thing.
Personally I would ditch any fuel bills unless they itemise a repayment plan. 12 months back is plenty imo.

The only thing I've come iunstuck with ever is losing the fecking log book for the car.

When I was getting tax credits I had to keep all those fuckers. I'm never going to be entitled again so I've binned all that.

I kept everything to do with my opened house - sone was required when I sold it.

If you are paye you are covered I think, self employed you need to keep all sorts.

Dp is super organised with paperwork and his never exceeds the lockable box file thing he's got.

Thank you very much for this. I’ve got rid of old tax credit papers for a good few years , no idea why I’ve kept so much. I’m on a roll now I’ve started.
