A murder mystery to watch with DD 15

We really enjoyed Enola Holmes and Knives Out. DD is not a very knowing teen and certainly wouldn't like anything gory. Any suggestions please?

Mindhunters film with val kilmer and Jonny Lee miller is quite good.

Mini TV series is killer net by Linda la plante

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 22/07/2023 01:04

Me and DD(14) recently watched Defending Jacob. That was very good.

LittleEsme · 22/07/2023 01:09

Thanks OP (and everyone). What a top thread. Excellent suggestions here for me and DD too!

Hawkins0001 · 22/07/2023 01:26

The TV series rosemary and thyme was quite good

Hawkins0001 · 22/07/2023 01:27

And Colombo series

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/07/2023 02:08

Veronica Mars? SHe's brilliant for young women.

I love everything you’ve said but wanted to add a lot of the mysteries Hallmark channel do are pretty good and inoffensive.

picture perfect
crossword murders
the ones set in a bakery I think the first one is called the cookie dough murder
the gourmet chef murders
the garage sale mysteries

(if you gooogle hallmark and mysteries it gives you a huge list) one of my big gripes is you can’t get the Hallmark channel properly in the UK

if not murder mysteries but just trying to solve a puzzle the lost letter mysteries are brilliant but can be quite emotional. I’ve cried at more than one.

All our DDs were big on Agatha Christie around that age… various bbc adaptations. Also how about Rebecca? Nothing can touch the book but the adaptations have been reasonable too!

New Tricks, at least before series 9 when the original cast started leaving. Very funny and since it’s all cold cases there’s not much bloodshed, though a good few fist fights along the way.

I forget how funny some of the early episodes were, until I rewatch them. Some of the cases use elements of real life cases.

Top quality guest stars - nearly everyone who ever worked with Dennis Waterman makes an appearance at some point.

And people who know London can play Spot the Location.

I love the Aurora Teagarden and The Garage Sale mysteries. Both ideal for Sunday afternoons.

Echo Death in Paradise and the spin off (not as good though!)
and Midsomer
but also echo the Joan Hickson Miss Marples 😍

Joan Hickson, hands down best Miss Marple IMHO.

caringcarer · 22/07/2023 13:27

Midsummer Murders
Morse
Lewis
Miss Marple
Broadchurch is very good

Yep, agreed, Albert Finney was a great actor, but pushes the characterization way too far!

Don't get me started on Kenneth Branagh's cringeworthy offering. The films are beautifully shot, but Branagh🙄

Johnny Lee Miller also plays Sherlock in an American series - Elementary. It's Sherlock recovering from his drug addiction in New York and Watson is played by Lucy Liu, they’re NYPD consultants. It’s brilliant, quite clever & funny but can be a bit heavy sometimes as it doesn’t shy away from his problems with addiction.

I was coming on to say Rebecca - latest film adaptation was a big hit here.

After watching Death on the Nile last night I agree!

Only Murders In The Building? It's on Disney +, two series atm but third due out next month. A small amount of gore but essentially lots of humour, and mystery.

Jongleterre · 22/07/2023 13:58

Available on YouTube

Code of a killer.

Based on true life murders but it doesn't dwell on the killings but in the police methods and the breakthrough of using DNA.

Just remembered Rowan Atkinson's Maigret. The plots are very slow moving, but the time and place are recreated suberbly.

Albert Finney was a great actor, but pushes the characterization way too far!

Finney and Ustinov were physically wrong for part, to start with. Poirot was a small man, and it was an important part of his characterisation, like Miss Marple being an (apparently) fluffy old lady was an important part of hers.

John Malkovich also did a very un-Poirot like Poirot once in a Christmas special for the bbc, who should have known better.

I must admit I've heard of it but need to watch it, sounds quite intriguing.

Only murders in the building on disney+

Totally second this

BeyondMyWits · 22/07/2023 16:52

For a good old fashioned historical murder mystery series I'd also try Cadfael. A monk in "olden times" solving crimes. Can really get into it as Derek Jacobi is in the lead role and makes it all so "cosy" and believable.

Harvey3 · 22/07/2023 19:15

Have you watched the Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbatch on iPlayer?

MagicClawHasNoChildren · 22/07/2023 19:18

The Edward Petherbridge Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries are great - Strong Poison, Have His Carcase, and Gaudy Night. GN in particular is fabulous!

That's an excellent one, especially the mystery on him faking his demise.

We need another series
