We really enjoyed Enola Holmes and Knives Out. DD is not a very knowing teen and certainly wouldn't like anything gory. Any suggestions please?

Death in Provence

Uggster1 · 21/07/2023 22:22

Agatha Christie's Poirot. Classic.

Following for ideas

moggerhanger · 21/07/2023 22:29

The recent adaptation of Why Didn't They Ask Evans? is really good.

My kids have also enjoyed Murder On The Blackpool Express and Death On The Tyne.

Some of the miss marples? The "Agatha Christie miss marples " on itv are v good

Not the itv Marple. Joan Hickson on the BBC is the only true Miss Marple.
The itv Poirots with David Suchet however are the best Poirots.

If you do go for The Thirty Nine Steps, try to get the 1930s original with Robert Donat. None of the film/tv versions are anything like the book, however. I'd recommend she read the book, and then read the next one, Greenmantle.

And it's not a murder mystery (but it is a mystery), but if she likes black and white classic films, The Third Man is one of the best British films ever made.

Uggster1 · 21/07/2023 22:42

"Joan Hickson is the only true Miss Marple.", thank god I've found a n Agatha Christie soulmate, And David Suchet is the embodiment of Poirot as written by AC.🤗

AlimonyHelp · 21/07/2023 22:47

Magpie murders on the beeb was great.

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 21/07/2023 22:54

I wish it was possible to have Murder on the Orient Express with the cast of the original film, but with Suchet as Poirot.

The BBC Miss Marples stayed true to the period as well as the character. ITV's Marple did neither.

Troyton · 21/07/2023 23:08

Any of the Peter Ustinov Poirots, Albert Finney's Murder on the Orient Express, Jeremy Brett version of Sherlock Holmes or Peter Cushing as Holmes in Hound of the Baskervilles.

Several episodes of the 70's run of Columbo are very good, A Friend In Deed, The Conspirators, Make Me A Perfect Murder, Murder By The Book. Then you have all the other classic US detective shows, all have great episodes and lesser ones.

Hitchcock, so many to choose from, avoid Psycho, great film, not gory but a masterpiece in scary! North By Northwest is a good yarn.

Joan Hickson as Miss Marple or for a lighter touch Margaret Rutherford in the same role.

From older british TV Anthony Quale as Adam Strange in Strange Report, an early CSI type forensics format, or chuck in a bit of supernatural Randal & Hopkirk. Then you have stuff like Bergerac, Shoestring etc... from the 80's.

More up to date Aurora Teagarden, Canadian/American co-production, very well produced and in no way offensive / scary.

Most of the above can be found on TV scedules throughout the year.

Yep, agreed, Albert Finney was a great actor, but pushes the characterization way too far!

Butteredtoast55 · 21/07/2023 23:14

Don't go for Poker Face..it's great as it's from the same director of the Knives Put films but it's very violent, sweary and dark!

Butteredtoast55 · 21/07/2023 23:15

Not murder mysteries again but at that age our DC loved the Hustle series.

Butteredtoast55 · 21/07/2023 23:16

Oops. Knives Out not Knives Put!

Screamingabdabz · 21/07/2023 23:16

istolethetalisker · 21/07/2023 20:51

Have you seen Knives Out: Glass Onion?

Did you not bother to read the op?

midsomermurderess · 21/07/2023 23:25

Agatha Raisin is fun. Prime, I think. And Brokenwood, a sort of NZ Midsomer Murders. That on UKTV Play

Troyton · 21/07/2023 23:27

Maybe not for now, but if she stays interested in crime, my 3 best true crime film adaptations, because they are all beautifully done in terms of adherance to facts, acting etc..

In Cold Blood
10 Rillington Place (Richard Attenborough version)
Zodiac

Prescottdanni123 · 21/07/2023 23:30

Vandervalk is normally pretty good. Not too gory because it starts before the watershed

icanflytoday · 21/07/2023 23:32

Death in Paradise

FairlyOddmother · 21/07/2023 23:33

Jonathan Creek. David Suchet as Poirot.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 21/07/2023 21:13

@istolethetalisker Glass Onion is one of my favourites!

I wasn’t sure they’d be able to match up to first one, but they did! And it felt like a film in its own right, too. I loved it

Wonderful. Thank you for all your suggestions. That'll keep us going for a while!

There are two Knives Out films. Glass Onion is the second film and it’s not clear from the OP whether she’s seen it.

Another vote for the Father Brown mysteries. There’s almost a sister series called the Sister Boniface mysteries (very gentle and very similar to Father Brown, except with a nun who the police depend on instead of a priest who upsets them). Any Miss Marple with Joan Hickson. Shakespeare and Hathaway. We’ve just watched See How They Run, which I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would. Jonathan Creek. The Kenneth Branagh adaptations of Poirot aren’t bad. Robert Downey Jnr’s version of Sherlock Holmes is quite entertaining. McDonald’s and Dodds is quite a gentle watch. I really enjoyed the Endeavour series and Lewis, but they might be a bit full on in some episodes.

Why the snark? It's a different film

Catsmere · 22/07/2023 00:51

New Tricks, at least before series 9 when the original cast started leaving. Very funny and since it’s all cold cases there’s not much bloodshed, though a good few fist fights along the way.
