Freezer Surprise

I batch cook fairly regularly and freeze portions for both kids and adults, and the answer to ‘what’s for tea, Mum?’ is very often ‘freezer surprise!’

I am meticulous at labelling and dating. My husband sometimes cooks as well, and is not.

There was a big bag marked with ‘A’ of some brown stuff. We decided to try it for tea tonight. Sometimes he puts ‘A’ on adult portions and it looked fairly large, like an adult portion of possibly a curry.

So. Today’s dinner is….drum roll….

Apple Purée!

He had frozen a load of apples from our tree for the cider he makes. A was for apples, not adult.

Not sure I fancy it. Takeaway, anyone?

What have others found in the depths of the freezer?

our lot once got served up curry on spaghetti because DH also fails to label. The smell didn’t release until it was half defrosted in the microwave and we wouldn’t normally have any kind of curry in the freezer except chicken but DH had experimented with mince.

They recently had chilli on penne, again, due to DH’s lack of labelling and the fact the kidney beans didn’t show themselves until it had partially defrosted.

DH also fails to read labels. I once asked him to get my chicken soup out of the freezer so I could have it when I got in from work. He took out the chicken stock I had frozen.

Oh i never label anything that goes in my freezer, it’s part of the fun of not having to cook from scratch!
“freezer surprise” and “fridge bottom Friday”, it’s life on the edge stuff here twice a week ;)

I freeze individual portions and don't label meals which are a one-box solution eg risotto, lasagna etc. Once a week we have Freezer Roulette.

We’ve had the chilli and pasta combo before as well. I might have to adopt ‘fridge bottom Friday’ too!

I once defrosted some chicken soup for lunch. It turned out to be cheese sauce! Ended up having unexpected macaroni cheese instead of soup.

My mum once had some friends coming and thought raspberries, meringues and ice cream would make a nice pudding so she fished a bag of raspberries out of the freezer to defrost....

Only she didn't!

Anyone like meringues, ice cream and red cabbage casserole??

In the 70s my mum used to buy half a pig and freeze it. One Saturday evening she took a joint of pork out to defrost ready for sunday lunch.
What greeted her on Sunday morning was half a pigs head!
We had egg and chips and gave the head to a neighbour(came from farming family) to make brawn with.

We've defrosted apple puree thinking it was something stew like before now Grin

DH fills our freezer with takeaway tubs containing a leftover portion of dinner, which he defrosts and eats for his lunch. None are labelled so I guess he enjoys a freezer surprise.
I rarely freeze anything as there is no bloody space due to all his tubs.

I just use old takeaway cartons to freeze one portion of either Bolognese, chilli, stew, casserole, and whatever portion comes out and defrosts DS looks then cooks either pasta or rice to go with.it and takes to work because they have a microwave and he's been saving for his house so not buying lunches out. Sometimes he finds a pasty or pork pies in the freezer if it has a yellow sticker on and he takes that.
