Any South Africans here? Passport question.

I have a question about SA travel. I am not having much luck contacting embassy, emails bouncing back and phones unanswered.

I took up EU citizenship without applying to retain SA citizenship. It is my understanding that I lost my SA citizenship. So what happens if I want to travel to SA? Can I travel on my EU passport or do I have to get an SA passport?

And what about my children, they have SA birth certs, but EU passports, now both over 18,what do we need to do for them?

A friend did this. The SA government never joined the dots. Has renewed her passport multiple times, voted from abroad multiple times and no one has ever said anything.
