Did Uxbridge just vote for Climate Change?

Tatami · 21/07/2023 07:10

By 495 votes? The reason for the narrow Tory win appears to be down to a campaign against the Ultra Low Emmission Zone. Cleaner air, doing something positive about Climate Change, helped by access to the best Public transport network in the country? Nah, more of the same please; dirty air and dirty politics. FFS Uxbridge.

@C8H10N4O2 that was in response to poster who said they hope they will vote better in different elections. I read what they said slightly wrong. But point still stands.
They won't vote anything other than Tory as the whole wider area is largely Tory. Including the council.

Wind your neck in a little and be a bit less confrontational

Recently spoke to a lady who has an electric car and a very good job. She takes weekly flights (many long haul) for work. She'll be fine.

Meanwhile, my mum in her late 80s, living near the edge of the expanded Ulez zone, who no longer drives, relies on my brother (who is just outside the zone) to take her shopping, social events etc. He can't afford to replace his car, especially now the cost of compliant cars has massively increased.

Last time I was visiting, I dropped my frail mother at her old people's group, a 10 minute drive (to save her taking 2 buses each way!) The car park was full of old Honda Jazz type cars, that the pensioners can't afford to replace. The club will probably fold if Khan gets his way.

God help anyone who needs a carer.

Khan announced this in November 2022 - for the less well off, it's a nightmare, especially during a cost of living crisis.

There's been zero consultation, and Khan has concocted loads of lies about 4,000 deaths, just trying to balance the books for TFL. £12.50 is not going to be used to try to save the planet.

Please please please get them to actually check online that their cars are compliant or not. There’s a massive misconception down to the advertising and lots of (generally older) people think their cars aren’t compliant when they are. I’ve had it time and time again at work where people are talking about scrapping or selling their cars.
the jazzes may be older but probably are compliant (if petrol).

It was a by-election, not a local election. They’re voting for their MP, same as in a general election.

Oh true! I still think it was a protest vote against ULEZ though and voters knew the MP would be up for re election next year anyway in the GE.

By elections are typically protest votes against standing gov

They have lower turnout but people who protest something turn up

It’s usually the gov they are doing this for

It absolutely was. that and cutting down the ulez cameras is the only power they locals have on something that’s going to crush them.

I absolutely believe the lack of support around it will lead to suicides of just tipping people over the edge.

yogasaurus · 21/07/2023 09:56

It has a massive negative impact on the poorest whilst the affluent middle classes will be fine.

Khan will also be fine, in his state-paid, bullet-proof Range Rover.

don’t mistake this as me questioning you, you sound better informed than me. I thought harefield was boris’s constituency. I’m sure a colleague was moaning about never seeing him.

just looked it up. It comes under ruislip but not South Ruislip. I thought they were responsible for him. I’ll scowl less if I’m in the co-op

From memory I think Harefield was in the old Uxbridge constituency but is now part of Ruislip-Northwood-Pinner.

The whole boundary revision before the last elections seemed a bit of a fudge to fix on a rock solid blue seat, a rock solid red seat and one which would swing between blue and red. I'm sure it was much more objective than that 😁

I don't think the LDs have ever had a sniff at any of the Hillingdon constituencies.

The most frustrating thing to me about the whole botched plan is that it could have gained support if rolled out and planned better. Having been a red (with green tinges) door knocker at elections anyone of us could have predicted this mess but were not listened to by Mr Nodebate.

But not in this case. In this case the voters apparently made it clear on doorsteps that their main objection to Labour was to do with a specific issue which was ULEZ

Absolutely - the car model cited in earlier post (Honda Jazz) is likely to be compliant.

Your car can be really old and still compliant

Ahhh ok. So I’m not completely mad, just a little out dated. And I can scowl at some, but maybe not others.

although I do know it’s definitely in ulez, yet denham, maple cross and rickmansworth is not. Despite being a slither between them.

Yes it over rode the usual scenario.

I wouldn’t call what will happen in GE from it, or any really

I think on the whole people agreed with it happening and from what I’d seen it was naturally happening anyway because it was so close to the north circ one. So people were changing to a compliant one as and when they could anyway. To bring it in, at speed it needed a lot more financial support.

Ok.
I’m taking comfort in the huge swing from Tory to Labour personally, though unfortunately not quite far enough on this occasion.

Some of the responses here are a great example of how wedded people are to their cars. Why are they driving a mile to a supermarket? That's a perfectly cyclable distance! For larger orders, there are deliveries, and don't tell me you're buying sacks of rubble from Wickes 3 times a week.

The whole point of the ULEZ and congestion charging is to get people to change their behaviour. It is not sustainable to drive short distances everywhere, or for your default answer to be "get in the car".

Because I'm disabled. My autistic kids only eat/ drink certain things. I can't carry a weekly shop on a bicycle. I certainly couldn't go to the supermarket everyday as I have two.disabilities that make me very tired.

Grantanow · 21/07/2023 10:04

You can't sell green policies to the poor without giving them financial help. Labour must take this on board as well as being certain of the science. Khan has badly mishandled the ULEZ policy.

Quite. A disgusting hypocrite. There are care workers who won't be able to go out to work doing their house calls...as if this will save us from climate change. Data shows the impact will be negligible.

Apparently one container ship emits the same pollution as 50 million diesel cars.

Ulez is a tiny drop in a huge ocean... utterly pointless

but if your car is compliant, you’re not going to change anything? It’s a money-grab.

Yes how does it change behaviour if your car is compliant

It only hits those who couldn’t afford to update old vehicles

People with funds just switch more often

Yes but the messaging is localised in by-elections rather than being subsumed in a general election campaign.

It is common for local issues to dominate in by-elections.
