What happens if a Will is contested?

I was reading yesterday about a gentleman who left his friend 5 million in his Will when he died in 2017. The sister contested the Will. Yesterday the judge upheld the Will to the friend.

What happened to the money and assets 2017 until yesterday?

They would have been in the hands of executors (people who hold them on trust) waiting the outcome of the court hearing. The executors have a duty to manage them safely. They can now be distributed according to the judgment.

The answer to the question in the thread title is that the lawyers make a lot of money.
