Is anyone awake? Just seen a HUGE spider. Help!!!!!!

I am terribly arachnophobic.

A fucking gigantic spider has just ran across my room. I tried to get it but it ran under the sofa I have in my room. The sofa is about an inch off the ground.

What do I do??!?!!!! Is there some kind of spider repellent I can put around my bed?

I feel sick and dizzy. There is no way I will sleep one wink knowing it's there.

Ugh, I could cry!

This phobia has gotten worse and worse, it's so irrational but I can't move past it.

Could you block edges of sofa with towels? Hopefully that would allay your fear perhaps.

Thank you so much for responding.

Unfortunately the sofa is huge and against two walls, it's too heavy for me to move.

Argh!!!

Oh no you have to catch it

Northernsouloldies · 20/07/2023 01:47

Sleep in another room if possible and try not think about it. I've no phobia of spiders and I appreciate peoples fears are real. Maybe think along the lines, it's tiny and you're not and it won't, can't hurt you.

BlameItOnTheGoose · 20/07/2023 01:47

The spider is way more terrified of you than you are of it. Which is why it ran for its life and is hiding under the sofa. It will not come for you in the night, I promise you.

Sincerely,
Someone in a spidery house 😊

Thank you.

I know this, I understand the rationale. But it's entirely irrational, I can't control the intense fear.

And it very well could in the night. I've had spiders run across my bed/me before.

Sorry OP I couldn’t sleep knowing it was still alive nearby it’d have to be squished or promptly relocated to outside in my house! Could you hoover him if it’ll reach under (put hoover outside after as it won’t kill him and he will crawl out Blush) or fly spray under if you have any

wandawaves · 20/07/2023 01:55

Spray bug spray under the lounge.

Crzy · 20/07/2023 01:56

Yep sadly I also don’t believe the more scared of you considering how many have ended up on and around me even running towards me while I freak out 🤮

It won't reach under and the sofa is too heavy for me to move unfortunately

Op, I've been on this planet for more than half a century and never had a house spider run at me. You will definitely see the morning. 😁

Crzy · 20/07/2023 02:01

Broom handle to scare it out then catch/dispose? Or deodorant may scare it out. Peppermint they don’t like if you have any peppermint oil in mix it with some water in a spray bottle and spray around bed and windowsills / doors it also deters rats and tbh it does seem to work when I remember to

Hope you are able to get some sleep. Good luck with the spider quest.

It's so close to the ground, they wouldn't fit underneath :(

Try the bug spray.

peakedatseven · 20/07/2023 02:24

This isn’t much help for tonight but have you tried doing some kind of CBT/exposure work on your phobia to try and minimise the impact of this type of thing in the future? It’s easy for people like me to avoid their phobias most of the time (heights) but spiders are more inconvenient as they just show up in your house and working on the phobia would be a lot more use in the long run than trying to deal with each spider as it shows up.

Liquorish · 20/07/2023 02:29

What do you usually do when you see one? I had one last year go under my bed and I stood on top of the bed for an hour until it came back out. I’m not looking forward to the next few months.

Allmyghosts · 20/07/2023 02:34

Get a cat, my tiny girl will not rest until she has dispatched any spider I show her, she is my saviour.

ChiPawPrint · 20/07/2023 02:44

Get the hoover pipe out.

TinaYouFatLard · 20/07/2023 02:50

Sleep in another room. I understand OP. I am in Florida now and have just today, for the first time in the the three years we have a house here, seen a snake outside near the patio. I am terrified so badly. I don’t think I will ever relax outside again.

Pawpatrolsucks · 20/07/2023 03:08

Get a large shoe in one hand and a can of bug spray. Spray under the couch until the carpet is white. Have the shoe ready just in case it comes out.
Sleep in another room, it will be dead in the morning.

jaundicedoutlook · 20/07/2023 03:26

If it makes you feel any better, I woke up to one of these in the bathroom this morning…

Happily we’re on holiday and (I hope) it won’t be coming back to the U.K. with us. DH unloaded some deodorant onto it and it ran out of the window, so all’s well now.

I'm terribly arachnophobic too so can completely sympathise.

When I was in my 20's I was less afraid than I am now. The turning point for me was when I saw a small one in the corner of my ceiling before bed but listened to all the people who say "it's more afraid of you than you are of it!" or "it won't come near you, just forget about it!". I woke up that night to a sharp pain in my arm and swiped away at it thinking I'd fallen asleep leaning on my earphone and it was digging in my arm but promptly snapped awake when I felt something small and soft brush off of my arm..... It was said spider who I had left alone in the corner of my ceiling. It had decided to crawl into my bed and bite me as I must have rolled on it in my sleep.

My arachnophobia ramped up massively after that and I now cannot sleep if I have seen one!
