Really struggling with headlamp deflectors for France!

DH and I have been poring over the Eurolites leaflet and Google for HOURS. We've identified the correct diagram for our Peugeot 5008 (2017 model) - but looking at the car itself, we cannot for the life of us figure out which of the two bulbs per side needs to have the deflector put on it. All four get brighter when we switch to full beam, so we just have no idea whether it's the inner bulbs or the outer bulbs that are the 'dipped headlamps' that need to have the deflectors applied.

Is there anyone with the same car, or other expertise, who can kindly put us out of our misery? We need to go to bed!

Silly question as I think you have already checked.

But my car (VW 2014) has electronic adjustments for almost everything- if you go into the computer, it will give you the option of headlamp left right hand drive.

I remember my dad, about 35 years ago, using duct tape on the headlights when we took our car to France!

(Sorry, no help, OP, but thanks for the memory!)

We have a 2020 5008 and are going to France on Friday. The deflectors have been bought but are still sitting on the cupboard unopened. So not much help I'm afraid. I was planning to have a look tomorrow. I assumed it would be straight forward so am a bit worried now.

I bought the deflectors from Halfords and I did the helpless female thing and asked the nice man in the shop to put them on for me. He did it in about 3 minutes.

SwedishEdith · 19/07/2023 23:40

I think we always have deflectors but have never actually got round to putting them on. Will depend how much night driving you plan on doing (although, obviously, know that you should have them on).

The manual unhelpfully tells us to consult an approved dealer, so it seems that something does have to be done, rather than the onboard computer having all the answers. Also, I have come across various sob stories of British drivers being fined for not having visible deflectors fitted even though their cars had an electronic adjustment. In fact we are not expecting to be doing much nighttime driving at all at this time of year, all of which makes me think that the deflectors are mainly for show and we just need to have them on there to look like we've made the effort! Still doesn't quite solve the problem of which pair of bulbs to go for though - I think we probably do need to get that bit right...

@Brintons , I really do feel like we're either not very clever or massively overthinking this! If you figure it out tomorrow, please could you post? We board the ferry at sundown...

You don't need them is the short answer. I've been driving and holidaying in France for more than 30 years including living there with a UK based car for 2 years and no police, local or national, have ever been concerned about my headlights.

Second the checking the manual approach if you have a new (ish) vehicle as it shouldn't be an onerous task to alter them if you feel you really need to.

MasterCherry · 20/07/2023 08:51

You're probably right, but I don't quite feel confident enough to ignore all the dire warnings and go without them! Have studied the manual and it's utterly unhelpful.

I'm imagining myself roaming the car deck all night, looking for another 5008 to copy...

Not the same make model but this is a Skoda Yeti with deflector stickers that has done many miles in France and never come a cropper.

@MasterCherry
ive just had a look. The instructions say that I should use diagram 4 for projector/xenon and that the twin projector headlights diagram 193 is only for models after 03/21.
But even though both are models are before 03/21 they do have twin bulbs. Could the instructions be wrong and we should use diagram 193?

Newer cars deflect down rather than left or right so often not needed.

MasterCherry · 20/07/2023 15:48

@Brintons that's far more sense than we've been able to make of it. I'm going with your solution. Thank you so much!

It doesn’t matter where you stick them. They serve absolutely no purpose other than to keep a bored gendarme off your back. Most modern cars with LED lamps can be set for LHD or RHD anyway which is far more effective than the deflectors. We’ve never been stopped in 30 years of driving on the continent.
