Top (Gritty) bits of TV that have stuck with you…

I’m getting so annoyed at subscribing to Netflix, Prime etc and never being able to find something to watch.

I have a few days off after a busy couple of weeks and I just want to binge some decent television and I just can’t find anything so looking for series that I might have missed…

I like quite dark plots with complex characters, enjoy learning more on historical crime cases though drama reconstructions…

Some if the series that I have enjoyed the most have been…

Craith/Hidden

The Red Riding trioligy

Manhunt

The Serpent

Snoanglar/Show Angels

Happy Valley

What have I missed that’s fallen through the cracks?

Cracker.
(Written by Jimmy McGovern, mid-1990s)

Robbie Coltrane as a brilliant, eccentric, flawed criminal psychologist.

Very dark in places.

3 series available on ITVx

You won't be disappointed!

I've just watched We Hunt Together. All on iplayer. It was different enough to hold my interest but teetered on the brink of unbelievable at times.

Complex characters abound in This Is England film and three follow-on series.

Very hard-hitting. Dark subjects. Also very funny and heartwarming at times.

Vicky McClure and Stephen Graham.

Still available on All4

Luther.

Great storylines. One of the creepiest scenes ever too.

And Idris Elba!

YoDood · 20/07/2023 09:25

Orange Is The New Black.

Yes it is ostensibly a (black) comedy, but deals in a very compelling way with the reasons why women end up in prison (drugs, poverty, prostitution, mental health issues) and also the prison system and in the later series immigration and how minors are treated in the states.

It contains some of the most powerful representations of those issues I’ve ever seen and some scenes have stayed with me.
