Top (Gritty) bits of TV that have stuck with you…

I’m getting so annoyed at subscribing to Netflix, Prime etc and never being able to find something to watch.

I have a few days off after a busy couple of weeks and I just want to binge some decent television and I just can’t find anything so looking for series that I might have missed…

I like quite dark plots with complex characters, enjoy learning more on historical crime cases though drama reconstructions…

Some if the series that I have enjoyed the most have been…

Craith/Hidden

The Red Riding trioligy

Manhunt

The Serpent

Snoanglar/Show Angels

Happy Valley

What have I missed that’s fallen through the cracks?

Dublin Murders
Blue Lights
Unforgotten
Some episodes of Black Mirror
This is going to hurt
And another vote for Years and Years, especially episode four

Black Mirror and Years and Years are now awfully close to our world though

And if you want really, really, really dark, Threads

The Shield. There's loads of it to binge, it came out around the time of The Wire and for me was superior.

The final season is so dark, tightly plotted and well acted that I still think of it ten years after watching it but am traumatised by key moments of it that I have no intention of rewatching it despite its brilliance!

I second this.

So many dark, terrible scenes still play in my head years later.

But absolutely masterful screenplay and acting.

Allmyghosts · 20/07/2023 20:54

The sixth commandment rl dramatisation on I player, very good and pretty bleak.

Appropriate adult, about Fred west

Utopia, very gritty but stylish (my favourite ever) TV show, huge conspiracy, it's about viruses and vaccination if that will trigger, sadly no third series, but not left on a cliffhanger much

Agree with this is England, some is very bleak

Forgot cucumber, Russell T Davies, slightly slow to get into but stick with it.

Original house of cards was brilliant

Torchwood children of earth

MyfanwyMontez · 20/07/2023 21:00

Another vote for Whitechapel , don’t know why they cancelled it . It was so good and really creepy sometimes - especially the last episode.

Allmyghosts · 20/07/2023 21:03

What was Whitechapel about?

WhoWants2Know · 20/07/2023 21:04

I just started watching True Detective on Now Tv and got drawn in quickly.

No Offence

This
The expanding foam episode

YoureOnMute · 20/07/2023 21:07

The Cry
It's A Sin (it's not dark but it's so compelling, tragic and powerful so it really stayed with me)
Appropriate Adult (I saw that someone else has suggested this and I wanted to second it as it's really good)
Kiri
National Treasure (not the film - 4 part series with Robbie Coltrane and Julie Walters)

Toomanycaketins · 20/07/2023 21:08

midsomermurderess · 20/07/2023 20:22

Spooks. The deep fat fryer. Once watched, never, ever forgotten.

Oh my goodness, this too

Toomanycaketins · 20/07/2023 21:09

Ripper street was kind of Victorian gritty

delilabell · 20/07/2023 21:15

The midwich cuckoo's is great

SuddenlyOld · 20/07/2023 21:16

For a series I'm surprised nobody has suggested Taboo with Tom Hardy - very good. Also another vote for breaking bad and line of duty.

Films - no country for old men, the revenant (Tom again), Harry Brown. All gritty films. And the missing with cate blanchet and Tommy Lee Jones - some unnerving scenes in that. Hard to believe the bad guy was Eric Schwieg

MrsJBaptiste · 20/07/2023 21:57

The Missing
Baptiste
The Bridge
Blue Lights
Luther
And obviously Line of Duty

BringMeTea · 20/07/2023 22:02

I am thoroughly enjoying rewatching Versailles. All 3 series are on iplayer. Agree The Shield is excellent too.

Coffeeandcake12 · 20/07/2023 22:12

Rillington Place
Baptiste

7Worfs · 20/07/2023 22:17

The Americans, if you haven’t seen it.
Fits your requirements 100%.

ComputerInitiateJump · 20/07/2023 22:39

Just popped back because I remembered the TV drama 'Mrs Wilson'. Ruth Wilson plays her own grandmother in a true story. It's excellent.

Blondey2023 · 20/07/2023 22:44

Sons of Anarchy

Breaking Bad followed by Better Call Saul

Sopranos

All bloody brilliant.

Gonksmum · 20/07/2023 22:49

Oh yes, if you can find the original House of Cards (from the early 90s), its well worth watching. The main character is a deliciously evil politician.

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 20/07/2023 23:48

Goliath on Prime. Billy Bob Thornton does film noir over 3 or 4 series that become progressively kookier.

Limth · 20/07/2023 23:52

Love/Hate - An Irish gangster drama. I absolutely hate gangster stuff usually but this programme is brilliant, sometimea really funny and has very good character development. It's on Amazon Prime

HeidiWhole · 21/07/2023 00:04

The Last of Us
Black Mirror
The OA (weird but good)
Ozark
This is England

jaffacakeany1 · 21/07/2023 00:12

Clementineorsatsuma · 20/07/2023 09:17

Luther.

Great storylines. One of the creepiest scenes ever too.

And Idris Elba!

Definitely Luther... and now the movie is out too, which was brilliant!

gabbyaggy · 21/07/2023 01:07

This is England is incredible but I will never return to it, nerves in my stomach at times.
