Tastier ways to take Spatone

My midwife has recommended spatone to get my iron levels up (I'm not anemic but close).

I bought a box of the artifical apple flavour version because the unflavoured version wasn't available at the pharmacy. It is rank!

I've tried it with apple juice, orange juice, tonic water and combinations of the above but it just makes them all taste awful and then I'm nauseous. It says on their website not to have it with a hot drink although I'm not sure why, maybe it makes it breakdown chemically.

Anyone got any more ideas? I've got a box to get through! And I have quite uncomfortable low-iron symptoms.

I'm thinking maybe putting it in a salad dressing or mixing it into a cold soup or just anything. Just anything to get the stuff in my system without gagging...! It's so savoury to my taste, it doesn't work in a sweet drink.

Thanks in advance!

If it's savoury, how about tomato juice?

Mummy08m · 19/07/2023 17:53

Good idea! I can mask it with tobacco that way!

Tabasco that should say...!

I took the original one with orange juice. It didn't taste brilliant, so I used a straw and put the straw as far back in my mouth as I could. That way I didn't get the taste too much.

Tbh I would just shot it, and follow with something more plesant

Delatron · 19/07/2023 20:11

I just shot it! But I don’t find it too unpleasant. Hold your nose? I think best not to drag it out in to a full on drink..

CloseYourMouthLynn · 19/07/2023 20:15

I take this every day and just shot it and wince and then take a sip of something else. It is horrid though!

Store it in the fridge and take it cold. Or, if that’s still too unpleasant, suck an ice cube before taking it so you numb your tastebuds.

I'm sort of glad I'm not the only one who finds it awful - I was chatting to a colleague who said she kind of liked it so I thought it must be another of my pregnancy food aversions.

Tomato juice wasn't available at my local yesterday so I'll try further afield today - in the meantime I'll have to shot it as you guys suggest! Aaargh...!

I will try this and hopefully it'll be better ice cold.

Also this is off topic but whenever I pass the alcohol cupboard I'm upset that I can't have (say) a negroni on ice as I'm PG and now I'm replacing it with a spatone on ice to make matters even worse lol

The original one is fine in a big glass of cold orange juice. Slightly metallic but not enough to make it unpalatable. I didn't like the flavoured one.

Blingismything · 20/07/2023 10:10

I used to take the original one in a glass of Ribena.

Mummy08m · 20/07/2023 13:15

I think I need to get through this box of yucky apple flavour and then buy the plain one! Tried another shop today but still no tomato juice.

I had some in a glass of coconut water this morning which was unpleasant but manageable - coconut water also has that sort of half savoury half sweet thing going on so it matched.

Ribena is a decent idea as at least that's a strong taste, might mask it... I'll try and get some of that
