My dog has been sleeping a lot for the last week or so, diarrhoea, crying at her dinner, but has shown elements of being herself and has eaten chicken but not the rice; we steered clear of her usual kibble and put her on chicken and rice to settle her tummy. She has been flapping her ears the last couple of days quite a lot and she was lying next to me just now and I found a lump behind her ear which turned out to be a tick which landed on the carpet. It looks whole, disgusting but whole. And I think dead but not entirely sure. Should I be concerned about her symptoms considering I found a tick? She has tick prevention treatment each month.

Thank you.

just zoomed in on a photo and it’s definitely dead and definitely headless… 😱

Can you put the photo on here?

Dog's symptoms are unlikely to be caused by that tick as they take a while to develop.

Yep! It’s not pleasant though…!

Jeez that's horrible!!!

Tbh OP I think you'd be best phoning a vet and running it past them

Ukholidaysaregreat · 18/07/2023 20:48

That's how they look. I think it still has its head which is good. It means it's not in your dog. Dog might need antibiotics. Keep the tick and take it with you. They may be able to test it. (Don't know if they would?!)

DontMakeMeShushYou · 18/07/2023 21:00

Yep, that's still got it's head I think. It looks gorged as well so it's either fed and fallen off naturally or fed and died from the tick medication (more likely if it is dead). It's therefore probably been attached for a couple of days so worth a trip to the vet. Poor doggo.

CockSpadget · 18/07/2023 21:06

It’s not headless, that’s what they look like. The meds have killed it, it prob fed and died a while ago as it is very dark (old blood). When they are freshly fed they are a blue/grey colour.

😂That’s a prettier photo than the dish full of ticks!

thank you everyone for your advice, I will call the vet in the morning. The tick is currently in a jam jar (empty one!) in the freezer. Not sure why I think we need to keep it frozen and take it with us.

Thanks everyone.
