4 year old fever, newborn coming in 2 days

Hi all

I am having an ELCS on Thurs. all being well I'll be home on Fri but who knows.

My little boy has had a fever for2 days. It's been at 40 a couple of times but meds have brought it down. Now it's fairly consistently 38-39, haven't called GP yet as he has had this before but usually bounces back quicker than this. We're managing it with ibuprofen and some calpol, but I'm worried about him and what the fever may turn into. He's had all relevant jabs but for some reason mumps is in my head - he's mentioned sore ears, a sore Willy and a headache over the past couple of days.

What do I do if he does? It's terrible timing of him but he's also missing his last days of pre school which honestly is breaking my heart. And factoring in a newborn.......

Help!

For context he's had no other symptoms than fever - he does have 4 or 5 spots on his arm that he's had for about 4-5 days but they've not grown or spread.

I think it's a no brainer. Take him to the gp tomorrow!

I've got hospital appts all day tomorrow as baby and me are both poorly hence the section on Thurs. also as I've said, this isn't unusual for him - his body just be good at fighting things off as he does get fevers from time to time, during growth spurts or when one of us has a little cold.

Sounds very difficult but if you reach 3 days and he still has very high temperatures I would want him seen. Can somebody else take him?

If he’s still having a fever tomorrow I’ll take him to be checked too. It should be improving by now if it’s just a virus.

As for you and baby, try to express some colostrum ahead of baby being born. If you’re well enough also try to breastfeed as soon as possible.

If your older child has a virus, it’s likely your immune system is working on it and the antibodies will be in your milk. It will help protect baby when they’re born from also catching it.

Do you have a H or P who could take him to the GP tomorrow?

He should be checked for Strep A (amongst other things) its a quick mouth swab. Is there anyone who can take him in, or help you take him in?

If he's still poorly tomorrow we will absolutely get him seen, I'm naively hoping he wakes up full of beans and cooler!
