@Dymaxion
His boyfriend complained to the police. He told them about the hard drive he'd found. I guess whenever they finished their relationship.

vera99 · 18/07/2023 22:33

The benchmark is Hugh Edwards which the right wing media wallowed in and on the Bylines evidence we have seen so far DW has exceeded that threshold by some length.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 18/07/2023 22:35

Would the press publish anything if they didn't have evidence, opening themselves up to be sued

These allegations are very serious so I can't imagine so. Especially after the HE debacle.

GlorianaCervixia · 18/07/2023 22:37

The benchmark for everyone - Huw Edwards and Dan Wootton included - should be solid evidence and good reporting. Not some tedious culture war.

People are speaking about 'proof' which doesn't exist.

A media organisation doesn't put information like this out there if there isn't truth behind it after 3 years worth of investigative journalism.
They just don't.

They have the proof.

I noticed that, the link with The News of the World.

The link to The News of the World being that the journalists on this article and Dan Wootton worked there together. So either you think they are all phone hackers ( doubtful ? ) or none of them are ?

SugarRaye · 18/07/2023 22:39

Whatever the actual truth is, there is a horrible satisfaction in seeing him a get a virtual kicking like he gave to Phil Schofield.

But I hope this isn't the future of British "journalism". These petty feuds breaking out, trying to settle old scores.

AutumnCrow · 18/07/2023 22:31

I noticed that, the link with The News of the World.

It says it in the Byline article, at the end.

Ah you meant the article. I thought you mean Byline Times itself.

CarlosAlcaraz · 18/07/2023 22:41

I wonder if the hard drive still exists, surely the ex would have given it to the police ?

Wait a minute, are you standing up for News of the World journalists? Because I thought everyone on MN thought they were the scummiest of the lot!

newnamethanks · 18/07/2023 22:41

Vera99 get some marshalls in, there's going to be a long queue for letting Mr Wotton know what it's like to be on the receiving end for a change.

GlorianaCervixia · 18/07/2023 22:44

The founders of Byline, the platform Byline Times was developed from, are both from Korea. I'd be curious to know if Byline Times is subject to UK defamation laws. Anyone know?

vera99 · 18/07/2023 22:45

From that video up thread I posted IT'S WAR - lawyers get ready it's PARTY TIME !

Dan Wootton trending on Twitter...
Anxioys · 18/07/2023 22:46

I liked on "the advice of my lawyers".

No statement about suing, which would have been easy to do.

AutumnCrow · 18/07/2023 22:46

StarbucksSmarterSister · 18/07/2023 22:39

Yes, in the article about Dan Wootton. It says at the end the two Byline writers used to work at the News of the World with Dan Wootton.

Dymaxion · 18/07/2023 22:46

Nope, I am saying that those NOTW journalists include Dan Wootton, so I am saying are they all tarred with the same brush ? Were all journalists working for the News of the World in whatever capacity all phone hackers ? If they were then Dan has some explaining to do ?

The implications of the claim that he paid anonymously for sexual footage of his colleagues are quite frightening. This is not some sort of "culture clash".

vera99 · 18/07/2023 22:51

He didn't blink once in that video - gonna be the legal fight of the century. Get your popcorn in.

RudsyFarmer · 18/07/2023 22:51

What the hell is going on? His speech just came through my FB news feed and man that was an awkward watch. Is there anyone on TV who isn’t trying to hold back the tide of skeletons tumbling out of their cupboards? I don’t understand. Every way you turn there’s someone spouting some vitriolic bullshit and then clutching their pearls days later saying ‘this is all so unfair’. ‘It’s trial by media’. Just bizarre.

I'm sure not all actually phone hacked but I thought the general feeling on here was that Murdochs NotW was an awful paper, the journalists were terrible people and they all knew about the phone hacking going on and did nothing about it. And, tbf, I've heard people condemn Wootton for that too because he worked for both the NotW and The Sun so he must have known.

baroqueandblue · 18/07/2023 22:58

Until tonight I had only ever heard of DW. I've just watched 5 minutes of his statement in that GB news clip. My almost immediate sense was that he's lying, and crapping himself, and desperately blaming social media, trolls, his ex, etc in the hopes that the gullible masses will believe him.

He's disturbing. Seems to be the sort who has relied for too long on merciless calculatedness in his dealings with others, and now he's run out of cover.

If it's true, it's awful that he targeted colleagues. Creepy. But why were these people sending him sexual footage. Why do adults do that?

Dymaxion · 18/07/2023 23:00

I'm sure not all actually phone hacked

You would have to have bottomless pockets and a very hungry legal team to say otherwise !
