Have to sell my car - gutted

I know it’s a luxury that many don’t have but with two small children it was just so useful. Unfortunately the times we are in means we can’t afford to run it anymore. Just a rant really 😭 any one else had to do the same?

Only family car or second car?

Escapetothecatshome · 18/07/2023 12:50

I feel your pain, I'm in the same boat, when the MOT runs out in October I'm getting rid 😥Its just becoming to expensive to run a second car that and the fact I know it will cost a fortune to pass the mot. But as pathetic as it sounds I'm dreading it x

I sold my car in April but ds is 18 and goes to work by bus. I work from home and was really sick of driving after menopause. It started to affect my nerves so I was glad to get rid! I walk a lot more which I really enjoy and the buses are ace plus I take taxis sometimes.

It must be more tricky for families with young children though.

I haven't even renewed my driving licence which expired in May! For me having no car is bliss!

I’m the same to be honest @Augustus40 ! Find myself very anxious driving but I’m quite anxious in general. Tbh I don’t use it for big trips or anything, just popping to the supermarket which I guess I can do online ordering for! I guess it’s just the freedom I feel is being taken away 😭 better for the environment though!

Op - given what you’ve been posting about very very recently about your husband - this is a bad idea. A very bad idea

I remember the crazy times when we only had one car... luckily DH worked nights, so I could have it during the day.
However, once DC started evening activities, the whole thing took on another dimension!

Agree with @Hateitissues

Based on another pp - You keep saying "we". He needs to contribute more to the family pot as life definitely gets harder without a car when you have two children nowadays. Public transport isn't reliable enough, unless you live in that other country called London.

It would have been impossible for me in the school run years though. I treat myself to the odd taxi if it is chucking it down with rain.

Is your husband the insane one who decided your car should be sold but his parents pointed out that it would inconvenience them so he (temporarily) changed his mind.

It's not meant to be a race to the bottom you know. His moral position isn't the one that counts. You are allowed to do what works for you.
